Continuous problems with R1T tailgate latch and finally this morning just completely failed. No response or hint of latching. Hard reset did nothing. 4th time over about 2 years the latch malfunction. Anyone else have this? Love the truck but this keeps happening - frustrating.

Going into shop. Suggestions welcome!

The unlatch button has failed on mine. It keeps unlatching itself every other time when the truck unlocks upon approach. Tailgate doesn’t fall open, but it is unlatched and this deactivates a bunch of sensors, etc. Going in for a fix.

Mine is latched and locked but shows open on the screen deactivating a numbers of sensors. We have an appointment for mobile service on February 12th. I'll post the outcome.

Mine got replaced last month. The latch wouldn’t “catch” and the tailgate would drop. After playing with the tailgate button it would seemingly work. I lent it to a neighbor to run to the lumber yard and they ended up spilling a load of plywood all over the road when the tailgate dropped during their drive, we were lucky no one was injured or property damaged.

Oh and to be clear, I didn’t start having issues until after my Tonneau install

I had the right latch go bad after delivery and the left side went a year later which would not allow the the tailgate to open which really sucked since I was on a camping trip. But Rivian got me in right away when I got home.

Yeah I've had similar issues for almost a year now, even after taking it to the service center, who did not fix the problem but claimed they did. (45k+ miles now.) Wasn't dropping, lots of squeaking on one side, sometimes pressing the button wouldn't unlatch it, long periods of time the truck would think it was open when it was closed, deactivating sensors.

Finally fixed it at least for now: Sprayed lubricant into both latches (in truck bed sides, they were full of dust due to another new issue, lots of dust getting inside the bed even with my manual tonneau on). Loosened the tailgate latch bolts slightly, then closed tailgate (so they align properly into the latches), then open tailgate and retighten bolts.

Fixed! It even drops open now as it should and no more squeaks for the time being.

My passenger side latch was replaced 3 times under mobile visit. The original lasted about a year, and each one after only a few months before failing. After the third, while awaiting an SC visit (Rivian said after 3 failures they require SC instead of mobile service for any issue) I started testing it myself and noticed it would only unlatch under pressure, so it was a tailgate alignment issue. They ended up replacing both latches and realigning the tailgate. It's working, for now...

We have had our R1T for two years. Ours has a Lomax Tri-fold rigid tonneau. This issue with the tail gate latch started a month ago.

I think this was mostly earlier vehicles. Mine were replaced via Mobil visit and nary a problem since. BTW, mine latched, but often read as open and made an odd whirring noise when opening.

My (Gen 1) latch(es?) failed Jan. 9, then mysteriously started working again Jan. 23. Portland SC told me to keep my Jan. 30 appointment and they'd replace both latches with what they asserted were redesigned versions. They further asserted they hadn't seen any vehicles with the new latches come back. Shockingly (to me), they started working on the replacement as soon as I brought in the vehicle; it took less than 1 1/2 hours and so far everything seems fine.

Which part number did they install? PT00013189-G or PT00162182-D?

Looking over my old invoices, I've gone through 5 latches. First service was Nov2023 and states remove/replace both but I was there and helped pry the side apart enough to reach the emergency pull string. Only the passenger was replaced, and no part# is listed. Next was June2024, same thing, listed both but I watched and only passenger side replaced. That lasted a month and was replaced Sep2024, this time it was in SC already for wiring harness so they supposedly did both there. Final fail was within a month of that visit, but took 3 months to get to SC again. The difference this time was "general diagnosis" and "tailgate adjust."

Who knows how long this one will last, but I'm almost out of warranty, so I started messing with it before the latest service. I can remove the panel and replace the latch myself no problem, but learned you really only need 1 latch. So if it fails again, I'm going to wire up a resistor to plug in there to prevent the "tailgate open" error instead.

After the Decenber update our latch failed. It showed that the tailgate wasn't closed but it was. We had a mobile tech come out and he said that it was a faulty one....it just wasn't reading it when it was closed. Took him about an hour.
