2022 Rivian R1T, 2016 Pilot, 2019 Jetta
Rivian is still a growing and cash-constrained company. I think they are smart to simply fix bugs in the Driver+ system without pushing major upgrades. They have enough challenges as they ramp up the dual motors for the R1, finish R2 design and development and build a new factory in GA.

The company is make-or-break on the success of R2, not advancing Driver+.

I believe L3 already exists today with NVIDIA Drive integration in the latest Merc EQS, with more coming in the next few years from Volvo, Jag/Rover, Hyundai, Xpeng, Nio, Polestar, BYD, Lucid, and others.
Looking at the fine print, it is just nice to have. L3 on freeway upto 40 mph.

I think it gives a false sense of security to a point buy giving the feeling of "I don't have to pay attention, I can play a game on my phone or set my laptop up and work". You give up what it is to be a responsible driver. If I am in control of my driving, I can react to my surroundings faster and smarter which comes with driving for over 40 years.
I don't think it even requires thinking that you don't have to pay attention. The reason driving aids are less fatiguing is simply because you are not paying as much attention.

Yeah, but it's true L3 where you don't have to hold the wheel or pay attention to the road. It's also the most dangerous level because it can give a false sense of security, so the rollout is understandably slow and gradual.

My guess (which is a pure guess) is Volvo or Lexus (Toyota), because both seem to be testing Luminar technology (https://www.luminartech.com/), especially Volvo (but there seem to be more Lexus SUVs on the Luminar website these days). Luminar is striving for level 5 autonomous driving someday, and I’m pretty sure (but not positive) that the head Luminar attorney is a former head Tesla attorney, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a natural relationship there. Luminar technology seems pretty impressive, too, so maybe paired with Tesla “FSD” computing it would be a game-changer? I really have no idea, but I do hope level 5 autonomy makes it to the mass market someday before my time is up. Oh, and for the record, as a former M3 owner who paid extra for FSD, I agree with everyone who notes that FSD was (and still is) a woefully unfulfilled promise by Tesla.

"....don't have to pay attention".......that right there scares the crap out of me. If I get fatigued I will pull over and rest, eat, and stretch.

FSD BETA is a joke. Watch enough videos of it doing its thing with an honest presenter and you'll see it's downright dangerous.
i have FSD on my Tesla (and I have an R1T).
I’m somewhat bemused by people saying it’s a joke. All I can assume is they’ve not tried it.

It’s not perfect, but I drive regularly from San Diego to LA and it makes a massive difference to the journey.
Far more relaxing and comfortable than with any other system I’ve ever tried.

Except Rivian is constantly improving their Driver+ system. I suspect they don't see a point in adding new capabilities before they nail down everything about L2, which is not the approach other OEMs are taking.
This might be an unpopular opinion, are they really? I'll grant that lane centering is slightly better and deactivations are slightly less, but on my truck it basically operates 98% the same as when it was delivered 15 months ago.

I was hoping to see more -- automatic reactivation after lane change, ability to activate it when not on mapped highways, or hands-odd driving like featured in pre-purchase promotional materials.

As it stands, it's still arguably worse than Mobileye / Autopilot V1 from 2014.


All that said, I don't think I would license FSD unless there is very limited investment internally.

I have had FSD on two Teslas, and it is a joke. It’s only useful when enhanced autopilot would suffice plenty.
