Sorry complete newbie here. Go easy on me. Just got my R1S and was wondering if it is safe to say that the NACS DC adapter they will be sending out to everyone will also work with my tesla home charger? Or do I need to buy another adaptor for that? Saw other threads where people found a tesla to J1772 adaptor on amazon to help them use their home tesla charger.
NACS DC adapter only works on DC so Superchargers only.
For AC Level1 and Level2 home and destination chargers you need the tesla to J1772 adapter. I use the Lectron but TeslaTap is the other popular option.
And you want to put the adapter onto the tesla cable first then plug into Rivian. Make sure charging is stopped by hitting stop charging if you have not finished by hitting charge limit (no green around charge port). Then unplug adapter with tesla cable attached from Rivian and then you can remove the adapter from the tesla cable.

And i think the tesla uni wall charger is cheaper than the rivian wall charger. Will it still work with the rivian charging app even if you use the tesla unli charger?
Why would you spend extra money on the universal. Buy the cheapest Tesla charger at 450 and the adapter from ev base and you save money.

I decided to future-proof my AC adapter needs, and support a company that not only designs but MAKES its products in the USA, by buying the full TeslaTap 80 amp adapter: http://www.umc-j1772.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=17&product_id=100 .

I also bought a Master 647D shackle lock, at my local hardware store, to secure the adapter to the Rivian. Unfortunately, stealing other people's adapters is a thing now. The shackle diameter is important -- too wide a shackle won't fit in the hole, and too narrow a shackle won't prevent unlatching. The Master 647D fits perfectly in my TeslaTap 80 amp adapter.

So far I've only used the TeslaTap AC adapter in 40-48 amp situations, but you never know. In this situation, I judged that it is better to have higher capacity and not need it, than to need higher capacity and not have it.

Congratulations on your R1S, @Newrivi! Welcome to the Rivian family!
What are you future proofing? Your vehicle will never charge faster then 48 amps on ac. You will need a new charger and a vehicle like a Porsche to even utilize those speeds.

Will you highly recommend a tesla uni charger at home instead of a rivian charger? Im getting my R1S quad this May.
Any major brand EVSE over the Rivian branded unit. The Rivian unit is expensive and cheaply made. Avoid it.

I have the universal one and the only benefit there is that the adapter fits nicely into the unit. However, I don’t have an adapter to take with me on trips.

if you go regular Tesla charger and buy your own adapter, you’ll also have that for the road for level 2 charging situations, like Tesla destination chargers.

99% of the charging on my R1S over the past year has been on a TeslaTap. Works perfectly. And it means I can charge any EV at my house if I have friends/family visit with an EV in addition to the Emporia charger with a J1772 plug that I also have available.

I bought this adapter last fall for $59 (+tax) using a coupon offer on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BQMCTMG2/

I bought to carry in the car just in case I ever found myself in a pinch. Ended up needing it several times to charge overnight at hotels on our recent spring break road trip through New Mexico. Worked great and supported 48 amp without getting warm or anything like that.

I see there's an active coupon offer right now that knocks it down to $51 currently. Guess I overpaid! :)

You could always upgrade to the Tesla Universal Wall Connector. It’s a 48 amp charger that has a Tesla to CCS AC adapter and a 24-foot long cable to reach all of the charging ports no matter where they’re located on the vehicle. Then when you trade in your CCS-enabled Rivian you can stop using the adapter because they’re all changing over to NACS in 2026.

In defense of my "future proofing" statement: I still don't know if Rivian's 48-amp limit is a software or hardware limitation. I certainly don't know whether it will ever change or not. (If it's a software limitation, it could change with a future OTA update.) And, while it might not be impossible, I don't think I'll ever have a J-1772 car that can accept more than 48 amps of AC power.

I've seen J-1772 chargers advertised as "80 amps," but I've never actually gotten more than 48 amps out of any Level 2 charger, in either the Bolts or the R1S. So you're right -- any "future proofing" I might get from an 80-amp connector is pretty theoretical, unless Rivian's 48-amp limit is a software limitation that could be increased by a Rivian OTA.

The only argument I have left, under my current use case, is the general argument that extra capacity can increase safety.

It's a hardware limitation. While we'd like to think electrons are just electrons, AC and DC in an EV are completely separate paths. Here's the tip: you will RARELY use anything above 40amp AC (standard NEMA 14-50), 48 is rarer-ish, and everything above that is a dying breed. Future EVs will NOT need more than that at home - you have all night to charge and EVs will only get more efficient, not less. On the road, DC superchargers are it. There is no need for higher AC systems.

I read this, and thought to myself, this is pretty much spot on...

Even if/when police start using EV's for patrol work, they will rely on Superchargers souly, as a Police car typically never stops moving. If they can get a V4 Charger, they will charge enough to either get thru the whole shift, or at least until lunch, and charge what they need for the rest of the shift.

Now the question is... Who is going to build the first EV for real world Police Work..

I do believe it is actually Rivian... Except for the Service Center support... So this will fall to either Ford Lightning, or the Chevy SilvErado, as there really isnt anything else I can see really doing it. And the range on the Silverado is staggering!

But thats a conversation for its own thread.
