Most people already knew ADAS is far safer than meatbag drivers, here's some actuarial evidence with money behind it.

Curious how that would be implemented. It says a 50% rate cut while FSD is driving. Does that mean they monitor all of the miles you drive divide the rate by the miles and issue credits for the FSD miles?

Lemonade does not hire human employees to process claims for customers, instead using artificial intelligence and chatbots to process claims.[4][5][6]
I wouldn't trust an insurance company that thinks "AI" and chatbots are enough to deal with claims.

Plus, I'm pretty Sawyer Merritt still has a huge "I need Musk to love me" complex, which also colors things.

Of particular note: " Lemonade's new partnership with Tesla provides the insurer with vehicle telemetry data which helps Lemonade to feed its risk prediction models. This includes the ability to distinguish when FSD is enabled and predict risk based on sensor precision as well as the version of FSD installed in the car. This "cuts per-mile rates for FSD-engaged driving by approximately 50%," according to Lemonade. (Lemonade charges a variable per-mile fee for its car insurance, on top of a base rate.) "

So Lemonade cuts your per mile fee by 1/2 IF you have the right FSD version and some vague concept of "Sensor Precision."

Hard Pass

Seems like another sketchy partnership, and I guess drivers are just supposed to take their word for it regarding how many FSD miles vs human driven miles over each six month premium period? What's next... extra charge because you drove in the rain or at night or in a "bad" area? Better read that fine print!

Even though Lemonade is a highly respected industry leading insurance company and not at all using this to generate free publicity and brand awareness, here is some interesting actual data:

MetricTesla (Model 3/Y)Comparable Luxury (BMW/Audi)
Annual Insurance Cost~$3,900+~$2,200
Claim FrequencyHighest in ClassAverage
Repair Severity (cost)High Moderate

Tesla has highest claim frequency in class.

Here is a comparison with Model Y vs the "meatbag" Rav 4
MetricTesla Model Y (Long Range)Toyota RAV4 (XLE/Hybrid)Difference
Annual Premium (Avg)~$3,650 – $4,000~$1,900 – $2,100+92% (Tesla)
MSRP~$46,000~$33,000+39% (Tesla)

Here is recent data demonstrating that Model Y in the real world is one of the most dangerous cars you can drive despite having very good collision safety

iSeeCars study (analyzing FARS data), which normalizes fatal accidents by miles driven.
  • Tesla Model Y: The study found a fatal accident rate of 10.6 cars per billion vehicle miles.
    • This is nearly 4x the national average (approx. 2.8).
    • It ranks as the 6th most dangerous vehicle on the road in their analysis.

Bottom line actual truth: The Model Y has a significantly higher fatal accident rate and nearly double the insurance cost of a comparable RAV4.

Rivian have made similar (though unspecified amount) claims about Rivian Insurance renewal. We are almost at our third year with them - and have never been able to activate it (or get a cogent answer about where it is available etc - its been a 'new' program rolling out as long as we have been with Rivian/Nationwide). https://rivian.com/support/article/how-do-rivians-insurance-rewards-work

1 random insurance company says this and suddenly it is true. FSD running into parked cop cars really makes a wise insurance move.

Time to practice some prompt engineering attacks to have them auto-approve my claim at 2x the reasonable rate!

Imagine trying to get a rate quote from them?

You "... okay, that's the coverage I want.. what will my rate be?"
Lemonade AI "... now tell me exactly every place you plan to drive over the next six months"

Just enter some poetry into the LLM and you can probably write your own policy for free.
