Hardwire only. That’s how it works the best. I know they used to have a plug in version. Not anymore.

I never understood the short-sighted thinking of people who insist on being able to plug their Wall Connectors into an outlet. It's dead simple to hard wire it and so much safer for your family.

Are there ANY advantages to getting the Rivian wall charger? Does it play nicer with the Rivian phone app or anything?

I don’t like buying Tesla products but like the idea of CCS and NACS in one unit. (Please, Rivian, make a universal wall mounted charger.)

Does anyone know if you could just swap out the front part of a wall charger and the cables, but keep the backplate and wiring in place from an existing Tesla Wall Charger? I have a gen 2 connected to a 60A breaker and I would like to not have to use an adapter to charge at home.

You cannot. The gen 2 and gen 3 non-universal one have a shorter contact sticking out from the backplate. The UWC sticks out farther due to the thicker housing to accommodate the j1772 plug.

That said, it’s very easy to swap from a gen 2 or gen 3 to the UWC. I swapped my gen 3 for a UWC

Unfortunately, the universal wall connector has a different backplate from a Gen3 wall connector. Just noticed someone already said that

So happy to read you've had a good experience charging both a Tesla and a Rivian with Tesla Universal Wall Connectors on a shared 60 amp circuit. We'll have exactly that set-up when we take delivery of an R2 late this year, or early next, after trading in one of our Teslas. Today we charge the two Teslas this way, and it's worked well (after working with Tesla support to get a blocking bug fixed last December).

Another item now off our "R2 potential blockers list".

Love mine too. I have a pair with the combo and the NACS and let them load share a 60A circuit without issues. So glad I went that route.

Just wanted to provide my feedback in case anyone was looking in to this charger or pre-purchase hunting.

My wife has a Tesla so I sold the gen 3 Tesla charger and purchased the universal one and wow. The adapter is nice, very very small. It appears to be well engineered. The car connected and charged right up

I figured I would share my experience in case anyone was on the fence. It’s Cheaper than the Rivian charger as well, without the native features of course.

We'll order our R2 in November or December. We're late to the Rivian party so quite happy with that timing.

Last December, when we installed a home generator, we also replaced our original gen2 Tesla wall connectors with a pair of Universal ones to share a 60 amp circuit rather than use two dedicated circuits. That change dropped a lot of load from our panel and let us get by with a single load management module for the generator.

So glad we did that as the Universal ones can also charge our R2 when it arrives.
