Perhaps unreasonably so, but I think there’s a perception that anyone who put down an early deposit on a Rivian is considered an early adopter and as such, there’s more comfort with doing the entire process online. Unfortunately, the offline world has all these requirements which make the online process clunky and disjointed. Hopefully, process requirements get streamlined and the technology to aid the process improves so within a few years time, we’ll consider it antiquated not to complete the full process online.

I tried reasoning with my Guide about the insurance requirement, too. I told them that Michigan state law has a specific form that insurers will issue same day that’s good for 30 days of coverage. Then, insurance providers have that full 30 days to issue a full certificate of coverage that’s good for the remainder of the 6 month policy.

Fortunately, I was able to convince my insurance agent to fast-track the work and give me the certificate with a 24-hour turnaround, but it’s really such an arbitrary rule that Rivian has. No other car transaction I’ve dealt with requires more than what’s mandated by state law.

Rivian says it’s because they have a backlog on the title paperwork, and they might not get to my title work within the 30-days, so they want more time. Great, except my liability begins (and theirs ends) when I take posssession and have the bill of sale in-hand. So that doesn’t hold water.

Wow... perhaps I got lucky here in CA but my 8 steps and picking up the R1 could not have been easier. And I should add I'm not a US citizen so like my tax return, was expecting more 'complications'.

The only slight pain was getting a bankers check (why does the USA still use checks - this ain't the '90's) which meant a 30min round trip to my bank.

All in, super simple. No problems. Hope that provides some level of comfort for those still waiting out.

Yes I suspect this is the case. In MA for example we do not have temporary plates, so Rivian presumably has to finish all the paperwork and legal hoop-jumping before delivery.

This Notary service is full online, but you need to have your laptop, PC or phone's camera working and a scan of the front of your Drivers License available to upload. Once the process begins you input your SS#, Driver's Lic info and basic address and phone info. You then get access to the Power of Attorney form, but you can't e-sign it till you answer the next set of questions. This next set of questions is timed.. you have exactly 2 min to answer all five questions. The questions were mostly regarding "which of the following vehicles if any have you owned" and there's a list of 5 vehicles with years like "1998 Ford Ranger", "2001 Dodge Viper" , etc and one choice "none of the above" Some of the choices were for boat trailers and motorcycles I've owned over the years. The oldest vehicle was from 1986!! We're talking 37yrs ago now!

Not great news for us old farts that have owned cars since the 1970s.
If I fail the test, I may just have to rely on my e-bike for transportation.

hope you enjoy the vehicle. Knowing what i know now, i would happily have waited (2x) the 2 years 9 months and 11 days i waited. This so far has been the most enjoyable vehicle i have ever owned. Beats out my '87 and '89 Trans Am GTA, my '07 Trailblazer SS and my '14 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 diesel.

Anyways, my 8 step was super easy, took me i think was 12 mins total. I didnt have the name issue like you, but i was told ahead of time of the 90 day insurance thing, As soon as i was given my vin, i updated my insurance info. I have Geico, ans as soon as i updated the vehicle, they provide the card on their app with the options to download, email, or print. also i didnt have to have anything notarized prior to delivery, one of the Rivian delivery guys was a notary and came with the stamp.
so i assume maybe depending on insurance provider and the state you are taking delivery in some things may be different for some.

Huh, I had to docusign some things during the 8 steps, but the person at the SC who helped me was a notary and notarized as I signed. That was from the Brooklyn SC.

I had to go downtown to pay property tax, then spend 90 minutes at the DMV to register and apply for title.

I remember going through that last year when relocating a vehicle to SC. The worst part was lack of parking at the DMV which is shared with the courts and apparently half the county was there for their day in court.

Passing KBA

You have 2 minutes to answer 4 out of 5 challenge questions correctly to verify your identity:

• If you fail or time out on your 1st attempt, you are limited to one retake within a 24-hour window.
• If you fail the retake (2nd attempt), you can try a 3rd time after 24 hours have passed from the time of the 1st attempt.
• If the 3rd attempt is failed, you are locked out for 48 hours from the time of the 1st attempt.
• You cannot attempt KBA more than 3 times in 48 hours. Any subsequent attempt outside of the original 48-hour window restarts the process.

If you intend to have Rivian secure your plates, I'd advise you to read the faq's at notarize.com (the vendor Rivian uses) before taking the 2min timed verification quiz.
