(27) Real World Rivian Range Test // When It Dies It Dies - YouTube

He had some trouble with this entire concept when the battery was totally dead, which is very important information to this process. If you are at 0 and nowhere near a charger... stop and get tow charged while you can, or you won't even be able to.

Also, this is a terrible real world range test when comparing vs the estimated range. They didn't use the Rivian navigation to get an actual estimate on distance, and drove through the mountains which would apply the same negatives to fuel economy with an ICE vehicle. I love he ran it down to nothing, but wouldn't put any value in the distance he got out of it.
I wonder if you leave R1T somewhere at 0 SOC, does it still lose juice at the same rate is it does when it is full or phantom losses are reduced.

I hope to see success stories of owners getting out of trouble when running out of juice without having to call Rivian to be towed. You can’t go on an adventure with piece of mind if you don’t have good backup plans.

I don't really see the phantom loss myself. Seems pretty minimal with the latest update.

This is another video he posted on the same event and his second attempt on tow charging after he was able to put it in drive. You have to press the go pedal while tow charging otherwise it will go on hold and fight it. It looks like he got 9 mile range being towed for 3 miles (may be around 30 mile/hr)

3mph could be for safety in case the tow truck slams on the brakes. Going much faster, you might frunk the tow truck, which could be painful to say the least.

Normal use of regenerative break usually involves a slow down and much shorter use. Even going down a mountain is probably less stress on inverters than being towed like this. So it may be to protect them as well. That said I saw a beemer towing a Tesla at high speed for longer than this and nothing blew up. I think R1T towing was under a lot of stress too.

I wonder what happens if inverters for regenerative break overheat. Does it disengage and resistance change?

Supposedly it needs to be in reverse and full throttle to tow charge.

Did they not try neutral or the off-road mode (hold is turned off)?

Thanks for posting this. I don’t remember seeing it. I wonder if production R1T is any different.

Rivian really need to put out a video on this instead of telling people not to do anything and let them try it themselves. Let me get this straight; if you are in drive being towed, you let off the go pedal to slow down and if you are in reverse, you push it further in to slow down. In both cases you are stressing out the towing vehicle more. I am dying to see a serious video on this. Comparing the drive and reverse with different tow vehicle. You don’t always have a semi available to tow you. How far do you keep your foot in and what do you use on display to figure out the optimal speed for the V6 Tacoma that is towing you so that he does not have to drop his transmission for being nice to you. This all need to be clear for everyone that goes on an “adventure“. Common Rivian. Still waiting for better communication.

That was very informative but also infuriating as the lead dude there needs to learn to shut up for more than 5s at a time and actually let the guests speak. Emme is a GOAT and I feel like half the stories and information she had to tell there was lost to him interjecting constantly trying to be funny. The point of having guests is... to focus on what THEY have to say - otherwise just do your own show. That was almost painful to watch as she'd start saying something interesting or providing more detail on something only to be immediately derailed and then move on to something else.

Also, those guys having their mind blown by being in reverse to get regen... haha nevermind, rant complete, that was just grating to listen to but had some good nuggets from Emme

I'm guessing its a legal liability to officially suggest how to do it. Also, we don't have any temperature readings for us to view. Or maybe they're trying to make it foolproof before having a simple "tow charge mode"

Foolproof never works. They always make better fools. They should have the basic info that system uses to make decision available to the owner in case there is a circumstance they didn't think of or another part of the system goes bad that make the system decision making process faulty. They could always leak the educational part of how to do something unofficially if they are afraid of their lawyers.
