Saw that RivianTracker posted about the passenger cubby getting removed from new builds for cost saving measures… no glovebox and cubby removed too… how much are they really saving here?

I find these to be useless personally.

The passenger seat cubby in my vehicle has remained empty for 2.5 years. There’s no real use for it to me. The one in the driver seat contains a single mailbox key.

They‘re just too small to be of any real use. I don’t think many people will miss it.

I'd give it up to get the Meridian audio system back...that is for sure!

That is a bummer, with the lack of glove box and the center console drawer being open at the top, allowing items to fly out, the seat cubbies are the only real good option to store the legally required registration and insurance information in a reasonably accessible location aside from the center arm rest.

Can't you just keep those things on your phone? In Colorado everything is on our phone, including license, registration, and insurance. Since I use PaaK anyway, I always have my phone with me so don't need to worry about carrying a wallet or keeping those documents in the vehicle. Maybe it's different in other states.

If this is really necessary for them to make a profit, Rivian is worse off than I thought. ?

I wish I could since, like you mentioned, most other things are. Sadly not all states allow it, even if mine did, driving out of state could be an issue, so I keep the paper copies to stay in compliance.

I prefer being able to just hand them two pieces of paper, rather than fumble through multiple apps to show my DL, registration and insurance. It's also fail-safe if I don't have my phone on me or the battery is dead (same reason I usually carry my fob).

Also I think most states take digital insurance now, but not all have digital DL and registration cards like CO. I just moved from CO to CA, and there is no equivalent app to the my CO app that houses all these documents. They are piloting digital licenses here, but they're not authorized for presentation to law enforcement, only TSA and participating retailers.

Makes sense. It’s rare that CO is ahead of the curve on technology!

I’ve never used the one on the passenger side. I think I have quarters in the driver side for those pesky old time parking meters. Would make no difference to me if they both went away.

For those talking about accessibility during driving, not really sure how safe accessing either of these under-seat cubbies would be while driving.

My center console has an elastic band on the rear wall of the storage area, I assume that is still there on the newer models. Works great to keep all of my required documentation in an envelope inside the elastic band. Makes it readily accessible without digging through the stuff in the cubby.

I have never once had anything fly out of my drawer. It's fairly deep, so if an object is tall enough to poke over the top of it, it still has more than enough of a lip to keep everything in place.

For reference, the nacs adapter fits almost entirely under the lip

It's one thing to cut costs - but these are just annoying cuts. Where do they expect people to store documents - these cubbies were already undersized to begin with. I'd never find my registration again if I stored it in the center console black hole.

It's in the same category as the early elimination of the 12v power under the dash.
That cubby was designed for sunglasses.

They serve as a spot for any smaller item that you don't want floating around in a cavernous center console.

Honestly they should have just had a glovebox from day 1 and never had the cubbies - which they've recognized and are including in the R2. Love my Rivian, but some of the design and cost-cutting decisions along the way have not made much sense. This is just one more example.

You ever been in a dead zone scrolling through your photos or trying to log in to your insurance app? Some things are just better as they were.

Ha! None of my stuff requires a connection to view it, but that does sound like a challenge!
