Managed to slow charge enough to get home. Service appointment is Monday morning. I'll try to report back what the actual issue is. I couldn't find these symptoms anywhere before.

previous post:
Hey friends, not sure if anyone can help, but my gen 1, R1T battery temp sensor isn't reading working. As a result it's charging super slow. Any idea where the sensor is? Looks like I might need a tow. We're 107mi from home on a road trip.

Thanks.

Battery temp does not show while charging, so that may not be the reason you are charging slowly.

Thanks for the quick input. I'll
unplug and see if it shows.

The battery is hot. AC hasn't worked since we set off this morning. Fan is running at max non stop. Maybe I lost the cooling system.

Not sure if it is the same situation but we hit a deer near Klamath Falls, Oregon. It charged ok after that in cool environments but when driving home to Hermosa Beach, CA down the very hot central valley, it would charge very slow as the battery temp was about 127-132 degrees. Finally it would not charge at all and had to be towed. The damage from the deer was mostly in the right front side of the R1S. My “guess” and that is all it is…..the temp sensor must be in that right front side area as the A/C did not work right away after the deer incident and the battery temp was wonky after that. By the way and for whatever it is worth, I was doing the speed limit on a single lane highway but the speed limit was 65mph. The deer was probably doing 20mph at a 90 degree angle to us. There was a car coming the other way and one behind us. I slammed on the brakes but had to go straight ahead. We hit the deer hard and thought the front end would be demolished but the cosmetic damage was not that much at all compared to the intense impact. Again, the temps sensors and the camera sensors were destroyed but the rest was pretty minimal. It truly is a tank and that gives me a safety confidence. We are grateful that we did not n get hurt. Will try and upload some pics. JB

My pics from the above listed deer incident. Probably hit the deer at a net 50 mph after severe braking from 65mph. Again, the temp sensor must be in the right front area as the A/C went out right away and the battery temp was hot and wonky after the incident. JB

I'd guess you lost the A/C. The A/C is also used to cool the coolant for the battery pack.

Sorry about the truck but the deer lost its life. I hope you weren’t speeding. But when going though forests at early and late day always best to go slower than posted limit. The deer belong there.

At least show some remorse. The animals are part of what makes getting to nature worthwhile.

Maybe don’t act like the guy set out to hit deer on purpose. Get over yourself.

So... About the AC problem. The fans ran at full tilt (surprisingly loud) almost all night last night, long after the battery had cooled down. Figured out how to go into service mode and confirmed AC condenser isn't turning on when called for. Tried to re-sync the 12v system to clear that fault, but didn't work. Service drop off is tomorrow morning. I'm sure Rivian will take care of the issues. They've always been great. In 87K miles now, this is really the first major thing that's gone wrong with my truck and it never left me stranded beyond the 2 hr charge stop with lots of amenities.
