Rivian R1T R1S Use ODB2 to Power Auxiliary Lights? IMG_0467

Found this adapter online. Does anyone know if I can use this to power a few LED light strips (with a switch/fuse/controller) on my gen2 R1T? Would prefer this instead of tapping into the factory wiring and battery if possible (truck is leased, although I’ll probably buy it out soon).

The amp draw from the 4x light strips adds up to about 8 amps total - and I’m not sure if there are other considerations. Electricity is not my strong suit! TIA.

Here is the controller

and lights (2x15in, 1x36, 1x49)

I just have a 15 watt phone charger connected with the schosche adapter and I get scolded every time my R1 goes in for service. The tech always writes in the work order that he unplugged it and to tell customer not to use it.

I can't imagine the ass chewing and damage that would be caused from connecting ditch lights.

The SAE spec for the OBD port is six amps.

96 watts of LED lighting is a HUGE amount! Crazy. I can't believe it uses that much. As reference, a generic household LED bulb is 9-11w. This is ten of those? WTF!

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with using the OBD port for power, many safe options.

EVs are not required to have an OBD port, so while Rivian might comply with the spec, they don’t have to. I would not do this. Direct connect to the battery would be better.

Yeah no, the OBD port is protected power, the battery is not. It's safe. We know that Rivian's OBD port has a 10a fuse (though I certainly would not use more than the SAE spec).
