Hello folks,

As I prepare all the docs for the R1S that I snagged from the R1 shop, I am struggling big time to find an insurance company that have the 2024 R1s on their database.
Even when I do a VIN search, they are not able to locate the car.
I noticed the VIN they provided me is not even on the Canadian Database, and I see is only on the US database.

Anyone had a similar experience? How long until they manage to import the VIN to Canada?

Are you sure it is a 2024 vehicle? Has it actually been imported to Canada yet? If they have not done the paperwork yet for it to cross the border it may not be in the database either.

I am not sure at all.
Well if the model is a 23, makes my life a lot easier as my main insurance company has the data for it.
But I will update here as I get more info from the Rivian guide

I just use the vin decoder and I havea model R on the 10th digit:

An R in the 10th VIN position indicates 2024 model year. That's per NHTSA regulations and true for all large-scale auto manufacturers. (By the way, you'll never find any of the letters I, O, or Q in any VIN to avoid possible confusion with the numbers 1 and 0.)

can you share info around pricing? Wondering if it is significantly high due to lack of data on the vehicle in Canada

My quote was just under $1300/year but this will obviously vary wildly based on your personal situation.

That is a great rate - thanks for sharing. You must be outside GTA? GTA rates have gone up significantly

I just saw 2023 Rivian on CAA, not 2024
I just went back and you're absolutely correct, I must have selected 2023. Sorry to have mislead.
I'm in the same boat as you with a recent shop purchase. I'm waiting to hear back from my current broker and will also probably call CAA today/tomorrow. Will let you know if I find out anything.

I realized that Canada insurers have probably 2 databases for the VINs, as I got the confirmation that my truck crossed the border last friday, one of the databases was updated on Monday, but not the other.

From my research:
CAA, Onlia, All Banks, Belairdirect and Aviva use what I call Database 2 (not updated yet)
Intacta and Cooperators use the Database 1 (I was able to get some quotes)

I also noticed that R1S is marked as high risk for Theft and the insurers are asking for TAG or similar tracking (aka Insurance + 400$+ for the anti-theft system).

Quoting with 2023 numbers, in my case Cooperators and Onlia were the cheapest by far (160$/m in my case) and belairdirect was the most expensive (365$/m on my profile)

But be aware, I have a very long drive licence and insurance record without claims or tickets that give me very nice prices for Ontario.

They put it as high risk I think because they don't know the risk?

The Fisker Ocean was put on that list as well. Not a single one has never been stolen so how is it high on the list?

Has a Rivian ever been stolen? Has one ever been stolen in Canada? I'm going to guess no.

It can be tracked in the Rivian app... Insurance gonna insurance

Yeah...
But I will add a Tag anyway... for the price of the car, it's a little one time investment that can save me insurance for the few next years

Did you got a quote from Aviva? I have called today and they couldn't able to find the Rivian R1S in their database.

My existing auto insurance is with Aviva and I need some help on getting the quote from Aviva.

Can someone help me?

Thanks
Hari

My bad, Aviva was one of the insurers that provided a quote using 2023 values just as reference, so I will move them to database 2
