How important do you think it is to wait for the 2027 model year of the R2 to pull the trigger on a purchase? Several people in the forum mention intending to do this. Isn't it possible that the "kinks" in the R2 will have been ironed out with development of the R1, or do you think the changes are significant enough that waiting to buy in 2027 is wise?

I’d buy one of the mules right now if it was available

Almost all new things have more issues earlier than the later copies of the same.

With R2, there are brand new suppliers, new processes and clearly new design approaches to lower costs and improve efficiencies. These all add up to having most likely issues early on.

Rivian is piloting the production line now and they will have built probably close to 50 R2 vehicles, if not more by the time they initiate delivery. That said, there is no way to predict, other than due to similarities and the statistical analyses to predict reliability on the new components and subassemblies. There will be infant mortality and teething issues early on. It happens to all manufacturers.

Most of the time, mid cycle updated models (e.g., gen 2 R2) will be have better quality and be more reliable than the initial model.

So I probably didn't help you and you probably don't want to wait for gen 2, R2 so think of it this way, let the initial deliveries take place and see how people are doing with them. Very quickly there will be a forum filled with comments - good and bad. Then you can decide.

No need to worry if you won't get your R2 for a long, long time. Rivian will be pumping them out. They will reach 150k at the full production rate and only fraction of the early reservations will turn into sales. Most likely that if you place an order for R2 after starts delivering, you probably would get yours within 6~9 months thereafter. By then, Rivian would have built 50k R2s hopefully.

I guess that would take you to your comment about 2027...

OP-depends on your risk tolerance. I was comfortable in getting my R1S two years ago. No major issues to speak of. SC has been great. Agree that R2 is a new model but it's safe to assume that a lot of the R1 DNA will be in the R2. I have a reservation for a R2 and no reservations in getting one of the first.

I get your point about waiting a year, the biggest question mark is the Maximus drive units which are a totally new component for the R2. However, I agree with the others above that there are a ton of lessons learned from R1 that will be put into R2 and the design of R2 is simpler than R1 especially in the suspension. I will be taking the first R1 they are willing to sell me.

On a semantic point it is very likely that the first model year of R2 is a 2027 released in 2026. Technically a manufacturer can start selling a particular model year on Jan 1 of the year prior. The second model year would then be a 2028.

Well said. I have T #1648* off the line. No issues requiring shop or mobile visit in 37k miles, 2.5 years. These things are likely assembled 70%?? by robots, so human error is minimized. It's no longer like hand assembling a Mustang in the 80's. Many things can be resolved with OTA updates. Mobile visits can also ease much pain.

Didn't Rivian, early on after 12k assemblies and many deliveries, loose a digital file for the torque on a wheel assembly nut, pulled a front wheel and touch all 12K of them with a torque wrench, from Friday night thru Monday night? Incredible dedication and teamwork.

My faith is in Rivian to come thru with another incredible vehicle!

No way to know. For me:
  1. The specs, options and configurations need to be finalized with all the relevant R2 details like actual pricing.
  2. The R2 needs to be available for public consumption or not a whole lot to talk about without even #1 occurring.
  3. The strategy for how they are allocating vehicles versus reservations is something else all together. Annual 155K capacity, with well over 100K reserved, some say closer to 200K is going to make this forum pretty active.

Unlikely you'll be first in line anyway unless you made a reservation on the first day.
