Hi all,

I have a R1S and a Model Y and will be installing a hardwired wall charger on new 60a circuit.

Looking for advice on going with the Tesla or the Rivian wall unit. Pros/Cons and actual experiences charging cross brand.

Tesla charger is well respected, cheaper, and can charge both (if you get the universal). Seems like the clear winner to me.

Just bought a Tesla Universal Charger to replace an OG wall charger v1 - current wall charger still works after 8 years, but want one unit for both cars and one 50a circuit (means 40a charging at max).

Late to the party but Tesla by far. More and more companies are adopting it. It will be the standard going forward for most EVs. So it is the best way to future proof.

It's not even that. there are many of EVs with CCS and the Tesla charger includes an adapter so it really doesn't matter.

Depends on the Tesla charger you get. If it doesn't have one, easy enough to get a NACS to CCS adaptor. I have a Tesla charger without it (and bought adaptors), a CCS charger, and a Setec 10kW DC charger (with CCS) for my bikes, so I have all my bases covered.

Tesla Universal.

1. Cheaper than Rivian's
2. Has native NACS and J1772 connectors in one package.
3. Supports dynamic load management.
4. Supports multi-EVSE load management.
5. Has admin controls to limit access to Tesla-only vehicles or a Tesla VIN whitelist, if you so desire.

Tesla Universal Charger. I had it in mind, then I watched State of Charge to see if Tom would give it a good rating, which he did.

My rationale for getting the Tesla Universal was that the J1772 adapter cannot accidentally drop to the concrete and crack nor will it get lost. It’s either attached to the end of the charging plug, or it’s magnetically locked inside the charger holster (when you’re charging your Tesla). The other reason I wanted to go with this is I’ll likely get another Rivian in 2027 and by then it’ll have a native NACS (Tesla) socket.

Why limit yourself, I have an Emporia, can plug in or hardwire, I have one each way.

Easily charge my R1S and my Tesla Model S and you can get it on Amazon for $399. You can check online, very good ratings from State of Charge.

Neither, this is what I have installed,
Autel Level 2 Home Smart EV Charger NACS, Up to 50Amp, Hardwired 240V EV Charge Station, Indoor/Outdoor Car Charging Station, Flexible 25-Foot Cable, Compatible with Tesla https://a.co/d/9loMIoZ
My wife drives a Y, with a deposit on an R2, I drive a low vin 22 R1T. I use an adapter and am happy not to send Elmo any money.
BTW these go on sale frequently for $400
