without an emergency brake it would be very sad to open your gate, get your mail, whatever... and turn around to see your rivian rolling away.

Am I to understand people want to just casually get out of their cars without putting them in park?

This mode is unnecessary. Just open the door and jump out. Involves no additional time you weren't already spending in your old car.

Double pull the door handle to open it before it's unlocked.

You could even choose to ignore the warnings about putting the vehicle in park first since it does it automatically when you leave anyway.
Thanks, I didn't know about that. Must have missed it or it wasn't in my old manual.
I think it would be much easier just to get a passenger that would do everything for you.
Same problem with the passenger, have to put it into park, wait for unlock, etc. But I didn't know about the double door handle trick. Will try today.

Exactly, I wasn't even aware that you have to "wait for it to unlock" when getting out. Get to 1mph and then hit park...and you kinda feel the eBrake slam on..and get out. Leave the door open while you open the gate so it doesn't relock while you're unlocking the gate.

Anyone who has a "manor" or "estate" that doesn't have either a gatekeeper or (at least) an electric gate operator is a prole boujee wannabee anyway. :)

How about they just make the current behavior a setting called nanny mode.

And if you turn it off it will not automatically park when you get out(right away...you can go ahead and park when it detects you've left and it is time to auto lock the door if that is enabled), will let you drive with the door open or your seat belt off or with your butt out of the seat because you're looking over your shoulder, or do anything else because it thinks it knows better than I do about what I should be doing.
Ha! That too is my annoyance. One-cheek-lift gets me every time. Especially backing a trailer. My guess is the younger folks don’t have the issue by relying on sensors. I can’t get my Drivers’ Ed. instructors voice out of my head,”always look over your shoulder before backing!”

If you're driving around in rural america, you spend time at the front end and the back end of many trips doing the following:
  1. pull up to gate, stop
  2. get out, open gate
  3. get back in, drive through gate, stop
  4. get out, shut gate
  5. continue on
In my R1T, this is a royal PITA, due to having to put the vehicle in park and wait for it to auto unlock the doors before I can get out. We almost always have to go through at least two gates every time we go out or come back. If we're out recreating, it could be significantly more. If I'm using the truck as a work truck, there are always gates to deal with.
It would be great if there was an added "Gate Mode" which would allow you to leave the vehicle in hold, open the door and get out and then get back in to continue. Once you reached 1 mph or whatever, it could remove gate mode and continue. This would require the auto-lock to not kick in until you reached some reasonably higher speed. We routinely do this in our 2019 subaru forester, although the dinging seat-belt bell will drive you crazy (thank you, Rivian, for stopping after 3 dings)
Anyone else having this "problem"?
Do Rivian not switch automatically into Park if on D when manually opening the door?
I have not tried that on my R1S, but my Teslas do that each time I haven to just stop and open the door.
What I would like is for Rivian Garage feature to start working with automatic gates where you cannot program your garage feature because gates cannot be put into Learn mode. My Teslas work great with community gates. Nice to have the gate entrance automatically open without me doing anything as my Teslas come up to it. PLEASE ENABLE THIS FEATURE, RIVIAN!!

I think it's a combo of door open plus no seatbelt.

EDIT: Nope, opening just the door does it, even if buckled up.

Auto gate idea is good though for gated communities.

I laughed way too hard at this. ?

Also, gate mode? Be like Chuck Norris here and just make your own gate. ?

My neighborhood gate uses a remote control like a garage door opener and it works. I programmed it using the remote, no where near the gate itself. No learn button. Our gate isn’t fancy enough to be automatic.

What I do wish is for the location to be able to be programmed on both sides of the gate. The button to open on the dash comes on before I get to the gate so I can open it going in before getting to the gate but when I’m leaving the button doesn’t show until I stop at the gate, which at that point its opening anyway because I ran over the magnetic sensors. 1rst world? Yeah probably, but still would be nice. Our gate is sssssssssssssssllllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww so hitting the button before getting to the gate is helpful. And yes, I know I can hit the garage icon on the screen, again, 1rst world…….

A warning to those of you who simply get out of the car relying on the Rivian to put it in park for you...

A friend of mine has a Mercedes that does the same thing...When he opens the door it automatically puts it in park for him. Turns out his wife's Subaru does not! Twice he's left it in drive and hopped out of the car only to see it rolling away from him!

Moral of this story is that it's easy to develop bad habits that are not universally applicable!

Is the Subaru you mentioned an EV or ICE?
For me it is not necessarily a bad habit of stepping out of my Teslas without shifting into Park first. It is a matter of forgetfulness rather in those rare instances when I happen to open the door while stopped before shifting it into P first.
Have had my Rivian for a month and barely driven it 100 miles due to additional work needed and thus have not found out (the hard way) whether Rivian has this feature or not.
I am extremely grateful to have my Rivian and my Teslas because they look out for me while driving. That is, I am extremely appreciative of the safety features they have such as pulling vehicle back into lane should I start to drift, warning me if I am coming up too fast and closing in on vehicle in front of me, etc. Will never buy an EV that lacks those safety features.

Can you program the gate twice and have two seperate prompts? Rivian supports programming up to 16 devices. I imagine 99.99% of owners will not hit the limit.
