I have a 2023 gen 1 R1T. I have a spare tire in the spare tire compartment. I've noticed this whenever I open the spare tire compartment lid. I open the lid and water drips from under it. There is obviously a considerable amount of water coating the underside of the lid and it runs when I tilt it up. Without taking out the tire, which is a hassle, there is a limit to what I can find out. There doesn't seem to be water pooled in the tire well. It actually felt quite dry other than what was dripping on it. It looks like the seal might be letting snow melt water through. Is there a drain for the channel around the lid to let water run out? Maybe the water isn't condensation (which it looks like) and just water running in.

It was never ever claimed to be water tight. Look at hatch lid. There are no seals. A tonneau cover would limit amount of direct exposure; but still not water tight.

Maybe adding a seal will help... Or maybe condensation will get trapped.

Mine has seals. But it's a Gen 2. And water still gets in anyway ?

This is the opposite of my experience.

My gasket is so tight, I literally have to stand on top of my spare tire well cover and bounce up and down a bunch to get it to seat enough that it doesn't 'catch' on the tailgate plastic overlap panel when I close it.

Suffice to say, I've never had any water in there whatsoever. Dry as a bone.

I'd maybe talk to Service about it.

I've never had to jump up and down on it, but I do have to put some gusto into pushing down on the two latch points to ensure it's closed. And same, there is indeed a rubber gasket that goes around the perimeter to keep it water tight. The only issue with condensation I've had is due to a wet tow strap being put in there with my spare tire. Aired it out this weekend actually as a result.

One little trick i've found for opening it without ripping my fingers apart to equalize the pressure inside it, is to unlatch it, then lift the tailgate gap panel, then you have easy access to the underside of the lid and can pop it that little bit to break the seal.

There are seals on the underside of the lid. It keeps all my items dry, unless I put something wet in there, then it causes tons of condensation, especially in the summer months.

Mine gets wet and had a consistent layer of water. SC said “normal” ?‍♂

I did notice a drain plug in the bottom. I just leave it out and no longer an issue.

I was searching for water tanks for the R1T spare tire compartment and came across this thread.
Good to know about the drain plug…but I’m surprised no one has created a water tank that neatly slots into the tire compartment. Could even leverage the air compressor to give it some water pressure.
Anyone seen any accessories like that (or anything else interesting) for use in place of a spare tire?

Ooh. Good find! Definitely not custom made for the Rivian…but seems like it should fit given that compartment is meant to house a full wheel & tire.
