What do we think a new tailgate costs?

How is it 10 hours of labor for tailgate and hinges? That seems asinine, as does 9 hours of painting. I have almost no mechanical ability and am pretty sure I could swap a tailgate in about an hour.

But what do I know?

Rear ended 6/2/23. Estimate the same day. Took the truck in 6/12. Other parties inspector came out at the end of the week. Parts have been ordered. Have yet to arrive. I live in Los Angeles. Note: body shop said that the truck will have to be towed to Rivian in El Segundo to be recalibrated. And said the sensors, once disconnected, will not work until the recalibration. Rental car is a 4Runner. I hate it.

Is this the body shop on La Brea and Pico? If so, they had my truck sitting in the sun for over a week and also damaged my frunk bin, which Rivian is replacing next week. Be sure to inspect your truck for any issues when you get it back!

My brother put a dent in the lift gate while loading his mountain bike. He bought a new one from Rivian for $1300.

This kind of stuff makes me so mad. Why do we not have a parts store we can go in and order the parts ourselves??? Come on Rivian!

Yeah you are completely blind with the tailgate down and those tiny sideview mirrors. Come to think of it, does the rear proximity warning system work with the tailgate down? I can't really remember if I got a warning from that either. I also find it funny to read in various places that you should never drive with your tailgate down. I have owned like 8 different pickup trucks over the years and have always had occasion to drive with the gate down. You can't tell a pickup truck owner that with a straight face, especially when the bed size is pretty limited to start with.

The only reason to even have the stupid cantilever tailgate is for more surface area when the tailgate is down. Its such an awful design choice in my mind, but if they don't recommend driving with it down then there is no purpose for it at all except to make it harder to get to the stuff that's in the bed, and to make the tailgate more difficult to close.

I'm so pissed, had the tailgate down and backing up at a busy transfer station dumping some construction debris and did not see a chain post and did a number on my tailgate. Dented and punched a hole. Only pray that the hinges and mounting points are not tweaked since the truck has so much torque.

Will go to the closest Rivian authorized repair center and brace myself. Anybody have experience with a tailgate replacement? Cost and lead time? I have to assume that they will replace and not repair. Also - does anyone know whether you can drive without a tailgate? It's tweaked enough that it rubs against the bumper if I open it. Would be nice to get it off and drive it like that until a new tailgate is supplied and painted.

I would check on EBay to see if you can get one there even if you have to get it painted. I had a small dent in the back of my R1T and a crack in the taillight. I bought the taillight on EBay for $270 that looked brand new. I got the repair done for $650 plus the cost of the taillight. You can’t even tell there was a dent, it came out perfect. I originally took it to a Rivian Certified shop in Houston and they gave me an estimate of $5,500. Completely out of line in my opinion. If it was the other guys fault I suppose a Certified shop makes sense but if it’s on your dime I would stay away.

Because they are a new manufacturer and are using all available parts for new builds.
