Are the Rivian door handles always sticking out when the car is unlocked?

Hello there, I just got my Rivian R1S, which I'm enjoying a lot. I do have one question (actually two regarding those door handles as I'm hoping I'm missing something.

We're used to leaving our cars unlocked in the driveway. Are the door handles always sticking out when the car is unlocked? Feels wrong. I guess I was expecting something like on a Tesla Model S where they'd fold back flush until I need to open the car.

Similarly, when the car is locked, is there no proximity sensor to unlock the car automatically? The only way that seems to work is to either use the key fob or press the key card against the handle. Is that right? I haven't been able to use the app yet (Still waiting on Rivian to make the change of ownership, 5 days and counting), but does the app unlock the car automatically?

Call me Tesla-spoiled, but I now realize how addictive that feature is

Proximity unlocking with the key FOB is supported - you have to toggle a setting in the center console to turn that on.

Yes, when it's unlocked the handles are always out.

Agree, I like it because it reminds me to lock the car. That said, if I forget, it would be an easy target for a thief that knows what he's looking for!

I have an Ioniq 5 that does the same thing with the door handles. I like the visual reminder as others have said but if I were ever to leave it unlocked in a public space it would be obvious that it could be easily gotten into.

Exactly. Besides the weird look, it's a huge tell. I kitesurf a lot and don't like taking any type of key on the water. I can easily leave my key fob in my Tesla because no one would notice the car is unlocked, but with the Rivian, the way those handles stick out, it screams to the whole world that the car is unlocked :-(

Sounds like you need to find one of those launch edition bracelets that you can take!

I also will often put the keycard in my boardshorts if I need to.

If you want to leave your R1S unlocked but don’t want the door handles sticking out you can put it in car wash mode, which closes the handles flush to the doors but they remain unlocked. Then you push on the dimple at the end of the door handle to pop it out enough to grab it and open the door.

But Car Wash mode is temporary, and will disengage after a few minutes... or at least that's been my experience.

I think that's a bug with sleep/wake. It didn't used to do it.

Hmmm. Might have to try it again, then. I've simply been locking the truck when I hand-wash it.

I plan to use an automatic car wash with big brushes for my R1T. I would hope that the car wash mode would stay in effect until the truck gets through the wash.

when the car is locked, all keys and the app (when open on your phone) should cause the vehicle to unlock when you walk up and lock when you walk away.
Proximity unlock has been working well for me, but locking when I walk away is sometimes variable, and I feel compelled
to lock it actively within the app.

Not all keys will do this. Only the FOB and phone if enabled. The keycard and band will not do proximity lock/unlock.
