What was your trade-in experience?

Question on the "taxable amount" for states that lower the amount based on trade-in. Does having a loan still out on the trade-in car cancel out any of that? Rivian isn't giving a great trade-in value for our Model S, but dropping the tax rate helps a lot.

I am still not completely done with my purchase. I live in Indiana, but went to a Chicago service center to purchase and pick up my R1S. So I still have to deal with the Indiana BMV to register and plate my vehicle at which time I will find out my total sales tax. Indiana sales tax is 7% whereas Rivian charged 6.25% at purchase; so I suspect I will be paying additional sales tax to IN. How much exactly, I don't know.

I am unfamiliar with IL sales tax rules, but I believe that Rivian will have to use part of the trade-in value to pay off the existing loan, then apply the balance towards the new vehicle.

If you were somehow able to pay off the existing loan beforehand in order to trade in a "loan free" vehicle you could get the entire trade-in value applied to the new vehicle thus maximizing any sales tax reduction benefit if there is one in IL.

Random/weird question regarding Rivian Trade-ins... I am in IL. Here it's legal to trade-in a vehicle that is not registered in-state - as long as the title is clear and everything.

I've contacted CarMax - they're cool with it. Contacted local dealer - they're cool with it. Have not been able to get Rivian CS on the line (and part of me feels like I won't get an answer from them on it, at least not easily) - so I am curious if anyone else has dealt with this?

I have a vehicle registered in a different state, I am hoping to avoid doing the registration/plates and title transfer (I think it's close to $800-1k in IL) if I can avoid it and just trade it in as-is. Whoever takes it has to do the title work anyway (and whatever costs are there are already factored into their offer to me) and I don't want to effectively pay for it twice. I'd like to shop all 3 options as many others have - Rivian, CarMax, dealer - but I'm not sure if Rivian will even accept it.

Anyone have experience with this? I realize it's a pretty edge case as far as timing and other conditions to be in this state, so it's a longshot, but figured I'd ask all the same

The Hummer I traded in to Rivian was registered in Indiana where I live. Nothing at all was said or questioned about that.

Yes, Yes and Yes. Rivian beat Vroom, Carmax and Carvana for me, but this always varies and I always quote multiple sources. The trade-in was so painless that I'd do it again even if it wasn't the absolute best value. It was great having my R1T dropped off as my RAM 1500 was picked up.

I would do the tradein with Rivian for the ease of it, but they're offering $34k when the average tradein is 42k on kbb, with a range of 38k to 45k. It's way low.

For me it was a non-event. They don't take into account, equipment tonneau covers, set of wheels and tires in snow country not to mention added factory maintenance insurance. I sold it to family for much more than I was offered by Rivian or any of the other "internet" guys that buy and sell vehicles. They got a good deal and I came out ahead of any other deal offered.

To close the loop on my question about sales tax when trading in a car with a loan still out, it doesn't matter. They deducted the value of the trade-in from what we owed in taxes, so take that into account when trading in.

I am wondering if anyone has encountered a similar experience as me. I picked an R1S out of the shop on July 5. Same day I submitted my info for a trade in offer on my 2018 Model X. Since then (7 full business days) I have not heard anything about the trade in so I am stuck in the process. I messaged / emailed my guide multiple times and have not heard anything back.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way to escalate since my guide seems to be MIA?

Yikes, I assume you're referring to a Model 3. With the recent price drops I bet trade-in values took a major hit.

I locked in a trade back in July, and I accepted Rivian's offer of $24,000 for my 2018 Model 3 LR with 55k miles.
