I can accept that we won’t get self driving like capabilities with gen1, at least they can render some cars in the blind spots with the existing cameras…

It's a pity the early adopters are being left out of the future growth plans, hardware limitations or not. I specifically asked my 'Guide' if there were any new features or advantages to waiting to 2025 for my purchase. I was told there were not.

I would seriously consider paying money to upgrade the hardware in my R1S once the feature set stabilizes with autonomy.

I wonder how much they could have lowered Gen1 prices if they didn't include all of the sensors and wiring that will never be activated.
I will sell you my entire G1 Mobileye system in return for some 12V outlets and cameras and speakers which don’t suck.

Yeah, I recall reading somewhere (here or Reddit) that the physical placement/view angle of the side cameras is probably the reason that they can't get side traffic detection to work reliably.

Same for Gen1 getting turn signal cam, it looks like garbage. But hey, we complained loud and hard for that garbage, so we got it!

Not going to happen. The fundamental vehicle system architecture is 100% different.

What else would you like to see? I hit the turn signal and see bikes, motorcycles and the absence of anything next to me before I change lanes. Besides maybe on screen texts... I'd be good with no more new features and just a refinement of software to eliminate bugs. I saw the first version of turn signal cam software, and what we have is miles better.

Maybe I just have some trash cameras, everything is blurry. I might get new ones.

The same reason the abandoned Driver+, to make Gen 2 look like a justified "upgrade"

Pretty sure Gen1 uses an off the shelf mobileye system that is only designed to use the one single forward camera. That is why it doesn't render anything behind

I tried to dig into this a day or two ago while reading this thread. It's unclear and not alot of technical deets are available. As you mentioned 1 ADAS camera, the Wikipedia page also says a single camera. There are multiple and successive versions of EyeQ. I read that Rivian Gen 1 uses EyeQ4 Mid grade (unconfirmed). If so, the EyeQ Web site says it's a single ADAS camera BUT I also found information that says it supports 4 or 8 cameras. Maybe it supports 4 or 8 cameras, but only 1 for ADAS, and the others are strictly for video display/recording, not vehicle detection.

To me, the EyeQ material makes it sound like Rivian thought they could do it all, but ran into issues. I don;t think it was a bait and switch on Rivian's part. Maybe EyeQ oversold the capabilities?

"The enhanced computational capabilities give EyeQ4®-based ADAS the ability to use cutting-edge computer vision algorithms like Deep Layered Networks and Graphical Models while processing information from 8 cameras simultaneously at 36 frames per second.

The design was done according to the ISO-26262 standard and will provide a safety level of ASIL-B(D). The EyeQ4® will accept multiple camera inputs from a trifocal front-sensing camera configuration, surround-view-systems of four wide field of view cameras, a long range rear-facing camera and information from multiple radars and scanning beam lasers scanners. Taken together, the EyeQ4® will be processing a safety “cocoon” around the vehicle – essential for autonomous driving.

In addition to the EyeQ4® “high” capability version, at an ASP of approximately three times that of an ADAS functionality chip, Mobileye also plans the launch of the EyeQ4® “medium” variant within the same timeframe. The EyeQ4®M will include a subset of EyeQ4®'s computational cores, enabling a select group of functions. In producing a family of EyeQ4® processors Mobileye will ensure that car makers can deliver a scalable hardware solution with full code and pin compatibility, thereby reducing complete validation costs and ensuring that multiple feature bundles can be offered to the end customer at the best possible price.

Availability

Engineering samples of EyeQ4® are expected to be available by the fourth quarter of 2015. First test hardware with the full suite of applications including active safety suite of customer functions, environmental modeling (for each of the 8 cameras), path planning for hands-free driving and fusion with sensors, is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2016. Series production is supported for early 2018 start of production."

Of the 10 (Gen 1 R1S) or 11 (Gen 1 R1T) cameras installed:
- Driver+ uses one. (center, top of the windshield)
- One was de-activated/removed. (interior camera)
- Motion/Gear/Incident/Birds-eye uses four (center bumper, rear bumper, one of the two in each of the mirrors)
- Blind spot camera uses the same mirror cameras as above.
- Bed cam in R1T uses one. (in the rear spoiler)

That accounts for 7 of the 10/11 installed. The other four cameras have never been used in any user-facing manner (including for Driver+). Two of the cameras in the mirror housing, and the two in the fender trims.
It's a shame those 4 can't be used in an alternate view in the Camera app, like a third option after the surround and side views we have now. I could see those unused camera views being useful off-road.

Yeah, or for the 'external' view surround camera like Lucid and others have where you can adjust the camera location in virtual space. You know, like RJ promised us and said he was testing... nearly 3 years ago...

Capabilities don't look oversold, and assuming Rivian saw this same image when they looked, it's pretty explicit.
