ThIs. Lots of folks gave Ford praise for making the lighting a regular truck, but that’s why few are interested. If you want an F150, get an ICE F150 as it’s cheaper and can do more. If you want an EV truck get a true EV truck. And Rivian is the only true ground up EV truck you can get today (and soon the CT).
Also, the price came in MUCH higher than most of us expected. At the time we could finally order one, the MSRP for an ER XLT - 300 mile range but cloth seats, no sunroof, smaller screen) was $75,000. Now admittedly, the Lariat was only about $3,500 more that had the larger screen, leather seats, and sunroof, but you’re talking about well over $80,000 for an upper mid-level trim - maybe pushing almost $90,000 based on the taxes in some states. That’s just way too expensive for most people in the market. To the best of my knowledge, Ford never released numbers on how many people didn’t follow through with their reservations, but I bet it was well over 90%.

Ford sold more than 4400 Lightnings in November. Rivian did not sell 16,000 R1Ts....

And how many of those Ford’s were discounted or on some special incentive? A lot.

I am also curious as the source of the OPs claim.

I know I am wary of dealing with Ford dealerships ever again, and I didn't even go during the Covid shenanigans.

The R1T can fit in more garages than a Lightning and that probably helps sell to people who don’t need a full-size pickup.

Doesn't matter. They're selling them.

I don’t care that much about the Lightning. But there’s a perfectly good ICE version that’s $20K cheaper and gas is back to $2.50/gal

Possibly, but if you need a full size pickup, then you buy and ICE pickup to do pickup stuff. The bed on the R1 is fine for me but if was a tradesman who needed a big bed, I wouldn’t have bought the R1.
Rivian were smart, they identified their market. Ford screwed up because they wrongly assumed that as they sell loads of F-150s then those buyers would make the jump (and pay the premium) to EV. Wrong.

I specifically excluded buyers who NEED a full-size pickup since people who need a full-size will NOT choose a Rivian.

On the other hand, people who don’t NEED a full-size can still buy from Rivian, Ford, GM, and, eventually, Tesla. However, if they want/need to fit the vehicle in a typical residential garage then Rivian is more likely to fit than any of the others.

The lightning is massive and not luxurious enough for the price. Everything is hard plastic, yuck.

IMO, Ford probably should have introduced Lightning as work truck (compelling low operating cost for commercial/fleet), an electrified Bronco as a "clean" adventure rig and an electrified Maverick for the larger lower tiered mass market. But, saddled to their old ways, they clearly can't chew gum and walk at the same time (messed up launch of both Lightning and ICE Bronco).

If Rivian weren't around, I'd get a Lightning in a heartbeat (over a Hummer or Cybertruck), but they're just so blah, my R1T is different, unique and fun. While I don't necessarily miss the traditional sales model, my local Ford dealer was great when I got my Bronco and having 6 potential service centers within 30 minutes would be nice.

I 100% would have bought an electric maverick. I’m glad it wasn’t an option now that I have the Rivian, but I would have traded my Model 3 for one if it existed.
