Center speedos have been a thing for a while. My family's 1987 Aerostar had it in the center:

I should note that possibly my single biggest irritant with our R1S (which we love) is that if I have the steering wheel in a place that it's comfortable (and, thus, safer), then I can't see the speedometer.
I agree 100%, and it's shocking how many automakers make this same mistake! The dumbest place to hide critical driving information is behind the small wheel we turn to control the vehicles direction. I don't want to have to peer through a moving wheel to see my speed, I want to position the steering wheel at the most comfortable location for long drives so I don't get a cramp between my shoulder blades. But a speedometer behind the wheel forces me to set the steering wheel position to the only setting that gives me a reasonable view through the wheel.

I'm sure it worked fine on the Model T, with a large diameter skinny steering wheel, but we are long past those days!

Because its more important to know your immediate surroundings while moving than how fast you're moving.

The center display shows proximity of vehicles around you while driving and help with blind spots.

The thing that Rivian has not done that Tesla has is to show vehicles behind. Only shows ahead and to the sides once it's even with the vehicle. I can see in front and the side of me easy enough, but would a much improved, if surrounding vehicles in the rear were shown.

This has been a gripe of mine ever since I first learned to drive — in a 1957 Chevy pickup — and with every car I’ve ever owned. It’s the reason why I opted for Tesla’s steering yoke. Problem solved.

I find the windshield and windows to have far better resolution and response than the screen at showing me my immediate surroundings.

There are already blind spot monitors, an optional camera view, rear/front, and a bird's eye 360 view that come on when needed. The ADAS display in the center is too inaccurate to be much more than a gimmick.

It was in the middle in the pre-launch demo UI:

They probably just moved it because that's how Tesla did it:

That is almost certainly the full reason why.

its actually really fun to be stationary at the lights & all those clearly immobile cars, buses (as trucks) & weird pedestrians, cyclists, & motorcyclists are all dancing in sync to some crazy music that makes me want to Shazam it, it must be worth listening to!!!

Whatever happened to just looking out of the windows & being situationally aware by nothing more complicated than the eyes you were given at birth?

Behind yes, it might be handy, opposite side of the road too, but as with so many others centre screen (strangely unobscured by the steering wheel) should be Speedo & (crazy thought) a trip odometer?

Like the Tractors, Combines, Landrovers, etc, in fact pretty much every vehicle I drove until I bought a Lancia Integrale ?

I've been enjoying my R1S for almost a year now. It's been a great car. But, for the life of me, I can't understand why the speedo is tucked away to the right and the "ghost cars" are right in the middle. Firstly, what use is the "vehicle display" showing my car and the other cars around me? It's wrong most of the time anyway.

Would it be at all possible for Rivian to move the speedo to the middle of the screen?
If you want it centered get an INEOS... the Grenadier speedometer is in the middle... of the front dash.

Now there's a good reason to get one! Could you kindly send your chauffeur, James, over with the Grenadier. I'd like to take it to the fox hunt today and see what Myles, my chauffeur, thinks of it. Ta.
