Good evening all

I have a question about using the Rivian in conserve mode. I pretty much leave it in conserve all the time. Will doing this put extra strain on the two motors being used constantly because you are using just those motors to pull the weight of the truck all the time? Or in the opposite, will it do anything to the motors not being used because they sit around not being used for so long?

just thoughts popping in my head.

Hi, I asked a tech while fixing my RIT for the latest recall issues and he said yes. In constant use in Conserve Mode it puts undue stress if used regularly (with quad motors) on the front two motors. He said to use it sparingly on say long highway drives but not for everyday.

unfortunately, my daily commute is 40 miles each way, all freeway.

So just curious, but why even use Conserve Mode in the first place if your commute is only 80 miles total? What's the point of Conserve Mode?

I don’t think I can agree with this. If you are using conserve mode, I would think you would be driving “conservatively”. I do not see how driving conservatively with the rear motors disconnected would add any real abnormal wear and tear.

If you set to conserve mode and are hammering it maybe but if that is what anyone would be doing then why?

I try to charge at work since they have free level 2 chargers. I just like having the extra in reserve for weekends...

now that i say it out loud, it sounds kind of dumb...??

Don't over think it.

I think as long as you mostly use the drive modes as intended (snow for snow, conserve for constant speed longer drives, etc.) you are good. Sure, if you are hustling around in conserve mode, that doesn't make sense and might stress drive train components more than if you do this in a 4 motor mode but driving agressively in ANY mode is going to stress drive train components.

If I had a 40 mile commute, I'd probably mostly use conserve but I'd also be switching it up with sport/all purpose depending on road conditions.

Hey, I am just quoting what the tech told me with the same question regarding conserve mode. Based on his remarks I used it to drive to Philly from Connecticut but have not really used it since "around town".

It's all good, I was just wondering!! You should pick up 20-25 miles per hour on the L2 chargers right? You should be topped off easily!

unfortunately my office uses flexpoint where there are about 20 chargers all tied to a central system and it distributes based on a lot of factors. i average about 12-15 miles per hour

I’d like to know if this was the tech‘s opinion or a fact from engineering.

If the amount of wear from driving any style is X, and the number of motors is Y, if you halve Y, you spread the same amount of X across half as many Y, so yea, driving in conserve all the time is most definitely going to put more wear and strain on your front motors.

From what I recall, the dual motor version isn't just a quad motor with 2 motors missing, so that should also point in this direction.

Also, as others have said, unless you need the range, why use conserve at all? If you think you want to drive in conserve all the time, trade your quad for a dual and be done with it.

You’ll also rapidly eat through tires in conserve mode so make sure you’re rotating frequently.

For what it's worth, a tech at the service center I use said that excessive use of Conserve Mode will cause significant tire wear on the front tires. This came up as I was asking because I regularly drive between the Bay Area and Utah. Bottom line is that I was advised not to use it unless I need it to make it to a charger.

I’m curious about this as well. I work from home so I have no commute, but I take 450 mile trips bi-weekly so I’ve got 11K miles on my R1T with probably 90% of that being conservative mode on the highway. I already need new tires on the front (rotated them to the back) so I know tire usage is much more for the fronts.
I do need the extended range since I’m driving so far, so hopefully it isn’t terrible to be doing it this way.
