You will have to buy a monkey. Buy lots and lots of bananas. Give the money a bucket and a squeegee. And use the bananas to train monkey on how to use bucket and squeegee.

Rivian has already said yes to wipers, like days following the reveal event a year ago. It's not on the show car because it is just a concept car, not production prototype. Production prototypes (and there will be many) is just starting to be made. See RJ's recent posts on IG.

I lived with an Ioniq 5 for a little under a year, and it was really shitty not having a rear wiper on our salty/slushy/muddy/dusty VT roads. I hope you’re right!

Toyota 4Runners have had the roll down rear glass and wipers for decades. 5th and now 6th Gens have them tucked up under the spoiler.


Older gens generally had them mounted onto the rear door panel itself.

It can be attached below the glass. The Toyota 4 runner has always had a roll down rear window and has always had a rear wiper.

I did watch a video where they said they were going to incorporate it, but I’m wondering how they’ll do that with the drop-down glass? Where is the wiper going to rest if not on the glass itself? This is an engineering conundrum and will complicate production and add cost. I think they’ll forgo the wiper.

This seems like a cool solution, but I hope Rivian can do it better, because all I see online are issues with 4Runner rear wipers not working and the drop-down glass not closing properly.

Obvious solution is to use the glass as the wiper. Little squeegee at the base of the glass, roll the window down to clean then right back up before too much slush gets in.

Or like the 4Runner, whichever.

Edit: tried to find a helpful website I saw recently with nice numerical analysis based off of the angle of glass, distance from bumper, shape of car etc for if it gets dirty road water or clean rain water. But couldn't find it again, sorry! Happy the R2 will have one!

With as clever as Rivian is, I can see them adding the wiper and then adding a locking mechanism so that when the window is down, it deactivates the ability to use the wiper. Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to build/program.

I had a trunk monkey, was great for emergency unlock, security, etc., but just remember to feed it.

We got back from vacation one year, yikes, it was a mess and we did NOT buy the optional replacement warranty ...

Yeah, we had a 4th Gen, loved it, Limited AWD had the optional V8.

Anyway, yeah, ours had this sort of design for the rear wiper (and obviously a rear window that opened/closed)
