Winter Tires on the 20" Wheels

I live in Colorado and go snowboarding and skiing very often in the winter (Almost every weekend). I am budgeting and planning purchases for the R2 and, from what I can find, the Trail-Terrain+ tires that come on the 20" wheels are not 3PMSF rated. Even if they were, due to the craziness that is I-70, I always run a set of winters. I am considering two things:

1. I currently have two sets of wheels for my car. I have been looking for a cheaper set of aftermarket wheels for the R2 and can't really find any of the correct size and load rating. Ideally, I'd rather have a winter and summer set that could easily be swapped out.

2. Just having the tires mounted and balanced on the stock rims twice a year. I don't love this method because I feel that it introduces chances for the shop to gouge and scratch the wheels. Let me know what your experiences are. (Considering having Rivian swap them as well, but I have no clue what their prices look like. I currently get everything done at Discount Tire.

Also, looks like only Michelin is making the X-Ice and Bridgestone the Blizzack in the R2 20" stock size. Hopefully Nokian releases a Hakkapeliitta R5 in the R2 sizes.

If you have any aftermarket wheel suggestions, I'd prefer 19s if you can find them.

I’m planning to also get a set of 20” winter wheels and tires. Planning to wait a few months for some aftermarket wheels to come to market and maybe more tires options. I’m hoping for the Continental VikingContact8!

When my order window opens I plan on searching for the same thing. Another set of wheel/tires that I can switch between when winter comes. I would like a set that maximizes range for summer trips and one that handles winter that might also be of use if we take an off road camping trip.

I've looked but haven't found a good aftermarket spare either. I may end up with Rivian spare but at close to $800 it's a little high.

I'm hoping as more R2's hit the road wheel and tire manufacturers will be offering options for us.

C'mon Rivian, offer the 19s on all models, unless there is a specific engineering reason not to.

Went through this with my Cayenne Turbo. I just swap tires twice per year since they are so large. Aftermaket rims/tires would have been over $6K so easy math to eat the switch costs twice/year.

Easy to mount winters on 20" rims compared to the 315/30-22 on the Cayenne, so I'd go this route. The Rivian rims are forged and beautiful. NO all season/AT tire will work as good as a dedicated winter

Very often, the OEM version of a tire is different. On another thread, somebody did the research and found this to be the case with this tire--I do not think it is 3PMSF rated--maybe it is really the same tire without the rating?

Good point, though Rivian did say (per engineer interviews online) that BFG designed the tire to Rivian's parameters to be more "road worthy/longer lasting". The rubber compound in dedicated winter tires is a lot different (read softer), not just the siping/tread design. I suspect BFG removed the 3PMSF for this reason?

Either way, in the OP use case or those that really drive in the cold/snow, no AT tire will do as well as a dedicated winter one.

The 20" BF Goodrich Trail Terrain A/Ts made for the R2 are not 3 peak, they are M+S.

There are several articles if you search on Google describing how the compound is different on the RIV version of this tire, and the tread depth is less - they did both in the interest of increasing range. In essence, the tire uses the BF Goodrich tread pattern, but the rest is fairly bespoke.

I plan to mount Toyo Open Country A/T IIIs on my R2 20" wheels. I've been running Toyo Open Country A/Ts on my Tundra (since 2010) and my wife's Highlander (since 2014). We get 40,000 to 50,000 miles out of them.

My work required a lot of off road driving in the boonies of Nevada. Before I started using the Toyos I experienced my share of side wall punctures but not one since. They're practical on road and off road tires. We've never noticed annoying levels of highway noise but that may be more apparent with an EV.

We also ski so I can attest to their winter capabilities. We run these tires year around and plan to do so with the R2.

I don't know if anyone makes aftermarket wheels for the R2 but I'd be confident some will come out by ski season. I run aftermarket wheels and Nokian Hakkas on my R1. For those suggesting a true AT tire like KO3 or Toyo, that is not a good replacement for a true winter tire as the first post already noted.

Rivian sells the Hakkas on a dedicated set in the gear shop for the R1, so I’m hoping that they’re working with Nokian on a tire for R2. As we’ve both said and I’m sure you’ve seen—ATs and all seasons are not a replacement for dedicated winters.

I’m stepping up from blizzaks to Hakkas for the better ice performance—especially on such a heavy vehicle. The Blizzaks have saved me from enough accidents I can justify buying the better set of Hakkas.

Unless meant to be factory original equipment, like the Goodyear Territory AT RIV or the Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus RIV, it had nothing to do with Rivian working with brand X—being a specialized winter tire. Everything to do with each tire manufacturer and whether they see a business case in offering any new sizes. The R1-compatible size of Hakka is an existing size; not made specifically for R1 or Rivian (hence no RIV in model designation. And Rivian offered it because it is one of the long standing industry benchmark for winter tires and Rivian could purchase them at a wholesale price that made sense profit-wise, after retail mark up. Land Rover Defender also run 255/60R20. So odds of having more options in this size is decent.

I have a separate set of wheels with Blizzack tires for my R1. Two years ago they were pretty necessary on that Denver to Summit county trek. I got the EVSportline ones.

The snow tires weren't necessary last winter because, uh, we didn't have a winter. Hopefully the upcoming winter is better.

I have 100% confidence that aftermarket options will pop up pretty quickly for the R2. Just give it a few months.
