Just adding my story here as a point of data for future potential buyers...

I ordered my 2025 R1S (perf large) back in Aug and just took delivery on 9/12 after doing a brief walk-around inspection to make sure things seemed up to snuff. The odometer at delivery read 12 miles. From the service center, I drove it home (~4 miles), threw a few items I needed for work in the back, drove to work (~5 miles), and then finally drove it to lunch with a coworker (<1 mile). After finishing lunch, we walked back out to the car and it was barely responsive -- took about 30 seconds to eventually unlock the doors. That's when the nightmare really began and I was greeted with, "Critical Battery Issue; Service vehicle immediately" along with a non-stop alert chime.

Fortunately, we weren't far from the office, so my friend was able to walk back to work while I contacted Rivian service and waited around. The nice service lady on the phone instructed me to do a full reset of the car which resulted in even more errors popping up. There were 6 errors in total, though I don't remember what all the other ones said. She then had me do an infotainment reboot, but that yielded nothing. So she sent a flatbed tow truck my direction and sent me loaner details (via Enterprise rental of an ICE car).

While waiting for the tow truck to arrive, I started smelling an odor which smelled like faint electronics overheating, so I got out of the R1S and opted to sit on a curb while waiting for the tow truck out of fear that it was about to go up in flames. :p When the tow driver arrived, the car was completely unresponsive and would no longer even allow the doors to open.

And here I am, 5 days later, still with no update from Rivian on the state of an R1S that I owned for a whopping ~1.5 hrs and less than 10 miles. Sigh...

I am so sorry to hear that you’re having issues. At 1.5 hours I think Rivian will make it right. My S has been a pleasure. I hope you’ll eventually have the same experience. Please keep us posted.

Sorry this happened so soon. I would be down if that were my first week of ownership too. Looks like you live up in the PNW and it seems like service is a little slower there, just because of demand, but they will get you taken care of.

Wow I'm so sorry. It sounds like you were thinking positively though. I would reach out to rivian and ask them for an ETC

Hopefully it's just a 12 volt battery or the converter.

You can ask rivian also for a service center loaner to replace the rental. Please come back and let us know what happens with this. Stay positive. Rivian will make it right. It just takes a lot of patience right now.

Yup, it seems like the service centers around here are heavily overwhelmed right now which I sympathize with. They actually towed the car to a further location rather than the one right near my house because they thought it could get looked at sooner there, which is nice.

I am hoping they'll do something in the end to help unsour the experience, but we'll see. In the ~20 minutes of driving I got with the car, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the R1S!

And, yeah, I'll definitely keep checking in to see if someone returns a loaner R1 soon so I can swap out the rental for it. After having driven EVs for a decade now, it honestly shocked me how "old feeling" even a high-end gas car feels at this point (the loaner Enterprise set me up with is a 2024 Porsche Cayenne, so I can't really complain there haha... but I'd much rather have a loaner Rivian)!

Update: 2.5 weeks later and I have my R1S back! In the end, there were no "fixes" or otherwise adjustments made to the vehicle to address the issue. They just put it through a bunch of sleep/wake cycles, drove it around the SC a little, and observed/attempted to investigate with engineering.

In the end, the word is that engineering believes they understand what happened and will be making some software tweaks in an upcoming release to hopefully avoid other cars hitting this, which is cool. Fingers crossed it remains problem free now!

But, yeah, no physical changes necessary (battery, wiring, harnesses, etc).

Also, some positive things to note:
- as soon as a loaner R1S got returned, they swapped out my rental with the loaner, which was great
- while they had the car in the SC being "investigated", they used the time to do some fine-tuning tweaks to a couple panel alignment issues that were noticed at delivery... so in a way, it's better than new!

So, they stated nothing was wrong but you had a faint electronics overheating smell? Did they say anything about that?

Nope... :S

According to them, when they began looking at the car after the tow truck dropped it off, "no faults were showing and everything has been working perfectly." And that's how it was for the 2.5 weeks they had it -- they just wouldn't release it back to me before at least having some idea about what caused the fault originally and higher confidence it wouldn't happen again. Whether or not they truly figured anything out or not is a mystery on my end. Communication throughout was never great.

I'm just hoping that, if it does happen again, it's in the next day or two rather than months down the line when I'm least expecting it. :p
