There goes our information, I'm sure there will be enough calls to tech support to make them eliminate the graph.
Hopefully they understand it is just a EV learning curve. Maybe Rivian can put out one of those communications things explaining this stuff so people know what to expect. Like others have said...if it was an issue....the truck would have bricked itself in the middle of an Interstate or something. Since no error lights or messages come up, it must be in the acceptable range of operation.

This happened to me last week as I was approaching the RAN in Benton Harbor. I was in Conserve And battery pre-conditioning for about 20 miles. About a quarter-mile from the charger I switched from Nav to Gauge and saw the front motors at ~280F and in the orange zone. I was pretty freaked out but proceeded to charge normally to 90%. The balance of the trip, about 120 miles, saw normal conditions. I had suspected that this had something to do with pre-conditioning as this was the only variable that was different. I have contacted my guide and have asked her for a response from engineering.
So, how can I decline pre-conditioning?

Um, why would you want to decline pre-conditioning? It is better for the battery to be at the proper charging temp.

I would like this as a feature as well. During our trip down to South Maryland it preconditioned for over an hour in 80° weather before we got to the only 50 kW charger which we were only staying at for 30 minutes. Was a total waste of energy

Even at 50kw, it puts less stress on your pack when charged at optimal temperatures, so I would submit that the energy was not wasted.

I would like to pre-condition as it is good for battery health and , from what I have seen, looks to only take about 4 miles from range. But could they , say, limit motor temp to , say, 200F?

Perhaps this is why Rivian doesn’t offer battery preconditioning while plugged into the wall.
It kind of does. I usually charge for an hour before departure on cool mornings

Why would it matter - they're not water cooled. The temp in the stator can reach 300F without issue as long as the wrapper on the windings and any bearing grease is designed for that temp.

Doesn't really. As far as I understand with the Tesla they run the motors at a very low stall and use the brakes to hold the car from moving which generates the waste heat

Why limit it? Nobody in this thread said they had any issues, it’s just speculation because they don’t understand how the motors / temperatures work. I don’t understand it either but I’m not one to raise a flag unless it turns into an issue.

Agree there. The engineers that designed the system know what they are doing.

I saw similar temps in the morning heading home from a weekend of camping in northern Michigan. It was cold and wet, so the heating up the battery explanation makes sense. I switched from conserve to all purpose in order to spread the heat out amongst the four motors which did bring the max temperature down a little bit, but then all 4 were running pretty warm until my first charging stop. Afterwards, temps were back to normal.

which determines the total power applied. Going from an

How is this accomplished technically? I guess what I mean is how do they get the motor to run hot without producing additional torque to each wheel?
Follow up question: How is this heat transferred to the battery?
