The set of Pirelli’s (22”) on my R1S had 30k on them. I probably could have eeked out another 5 or 6. The performed well for my use. I’ll probably get the 21’s on the R2.

On another set of Pirelli’s I only got 3k on them, but that was on my Ducati which I rode hard.

I think I’m going with the 21’s. Damn near a 10% range hit going with the 20’s. Plus the 21’s should be quiet than the AT’s, and ever so slightly faster. Had Pirelli’s Elects on my Model S and loved them. Great grip, quiet, and got good life out of them.

I think a BIG part of the nearly 10% range hit for the 20“ with AT’s IS the AT’s.. technically, with a more performance all season or dry season tire much of that 10% should be reduced to quite a bit less if not nothing..

I wonder if the Premium's Pirelli 20" AS will be a double-secret build option on Performance? Or maybe a swap at delivery? I want 20" but have no use for BFG AT that's (apparently) not 3PMSF. Seems a packaging miscue, but aiming for early-MY28 so perhaps it gets sorted out during year one.
  • 20-inch BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A+ tires (255/60R20). This rugged setup is optimized for loose gravel, dirt, and confident off-road handling.
  • 20-inch Pirelli Scorpion AS / Scorpion MS tires (255/60R20). These are designed for everyday driving and feature low rolling resistance to maximize battery range.
We have Pirelli WeatherActive 3PMSF on 3 cars, would get them if eventually offered in RS size.

I’m pretty sure that within 2 weeks once deliveries start, someone in the reviewer community will have done a swap out of the AT’s for AS or other on the 20” and we’ll have our answer.

It’s the kind of thing that OOS would do in a heartbeat.

In S. Florida and I'm going with 20". My reason is all the construction in the area. I always get nails or something in the tires and have had to replace them, so I hate being stuck with a tire I might need to wait for although I am aware this has improved. I know the 21" offer more range but I have to suffer on those few occasions I make long trips. In the end, the difference in an 800v vs. 400v is 15 mins or so, so it's not too terrible. I'll read these posts while I wait. I'm thankful I will have the option to choose from date of purchase...

Since customer deliveries are coming up,
I’m leaning towards the 21’s but I can’t find the tire size 255/55/21 anywhere online… I also read that the stock Pirellis wear out fast. I wouldn’t mind the upfront $1,000 upgrade for the 20’s AT if i
could save some headache and getting overpriced 255/55/21’s in the future.

What do you guys think
Yes, 20”, 22” 24” are standard, not so much the 21” so I am thinking of spending $1000 more to save me over $2000 each tire replacement down the road.

Discount doesn’t even carry 255/55/21, special order. The closest they have on hand is 255/50/21. Way more expensive than the 20”s.

yea see so there’s not really a clear answer… i don’t do snow tires nor really prefer the look of the 20’s or the range hit. maybe just take the gamble and go 21’s and hope for tire options when i need to change….

I think that by the time 99% of the folks on this forum have the opportunity to make a purchase that there will be lots of data out there and experiences of early adopters.

I could also see a situation where they change or modify options in the future based on feedback.

I can see it costing a $1000 extra at a tire change so you would need to be in your second (50k + miles) to make money back

I'm getting the 20".... but it's an easy choice for me since I like that style better and actually want it for off-roading (non-snow). The 19"s that come on the Standard trim look pretty good to me too. I may wish to trade with someone for those at some point. Then I could get even beefier tires.

I have seen the tires in person and the tread on the 21 is very very low, i think you will be lucky to get 20k miles out of a set. Just for reference on the OG 21 from the R1 it took 3 years to get more option and none are as cheap as the 20's.

a set of the 21's is $2k and a set of the 20's is $1k. Your payback is first change and then you are in the +. As an example, my 21's only got about 18k miles but my 20's on my R1 will get 55k miles.

I am going with the 20's even though I like the 21's better. Also to add in I have never had good experience with OEM Perellis

Another thing I think people are missing is the ride quality will be much better with the 20's. All the review cars were on 20's not 21's and they loved the ride. Just something to keep in mind.

What about the loss of range though? 23 miles is significant.

LOL

Since these are all on the 5-cycle test pattern none will achieve the rated range. Expect 280-300 for real actual use at 100% SOC. I charge my R1's daily not an issue the extra range. You will never actually realize a difference. Similar range penalty on the R1 and has never been an issue on trips.

I can tell you this, the penalty to the ride quality will be more noticeable than the missing range... In fact, I can tell you firsthand in order of best ride to worst on my R1's, with 20's best, then 21's the worst is 22's. Notice as the tire gets smaller the ride gets worse. This will be the same on the R2 if not more pronounced since the R2 does not have air springs. I can't believe most people skipped over all the review cars had 20's

Less range in real world is expected, nothing new here. There will be an additional 10% hit on that reduced real world range, on 20s. 20s will have better ride, but will also have AT vibration through steering and the noise. 20s with AS is best, but Rivian won't offer that.

Everyone has different range requirements. Cold weather loss, real world loss, only being able to use 10-90% of soc will all eat into the maximum distance between chargers on long drives.
