I'm surprised no one is asking the question about value....if the 20" tires are less expensive than the 21" version, then why the $1,000 premium on the 20" package?

Can anyone confirm the 20" wheel is worth over $1,000 more (expensive design, durability, etc.)? These are both forged wheels, correct? Generically, is seems like the 20" package should be discounted a $1,000. I wonder if the Rivian bean counters are laughing at this thread.

For the same reason flat white paint is also $1k.

I wonder if the Premium's Pirelli 20" AS will be a double-secret build option on Performance? Or maybe a swap at delivery? I want 20" but have no use for BFG AT that's (apparently) not 3PMSF. Seems a packaging miscue, but aiming for early-MY28 so perhaps it gets sorted out during year one.
  • 20-inch BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain T/A+ tires (255/60R20). This rugged setup is optimized for loose gravel, dirt, and confident off-road handling.
  • 20-inch Pirelli Scorpion AS / Scorpion MS tires (255/60R20). These are designed for everyday driving and feature low rolling resistance to maximize battery range.
We have Pirelli WeatherActive 3PMSF on 3 cars, would get them if eventually offered in RS size.
What about the loss of range though? 23 miles is significant.
I have no interest in losing range for AT tires that (apparently) aren't 3PMSF. So I'd prefer the 20" AS on those nifty 20" AT wheels from the factory and hope Pirelli WeatherActive (or Michelin-whatever) 3PMSF appear in R2 size.

I have seen the tires in person and the tread on the 21 is very very low, i think you will be lucky to get 20k miles out of a set. Just for reference on the OG 21 from the R1 it took 3 years to get more option and none are as cheap as the 20's.

a set of the 21's is $2k and a set of the 20's is $1k. Your payback is first change and then you are in the +. As an example, my 21's only got about 18k miles but my 20's on my R1 will get 55k miles.

I am going with the 20's even though I like the 21's better. Also to add in I have never had good experience with OEM Perellis

Another thing I think people are missing is the ride quality will be much better with the 20's. All the review cars were on 20's not 21's and they loved the ride. Just something to keep in mind.
The sidewall difference is half an inch. If the outer diameter for both is 32” then you have 6 or 5.5” of sidewall - does 0.5” make a massive difference to ride quality?

Yup-

Where the pricing gets a little stinky for me is: Those pretty 21's are included in the Performance trim - then $1000 to switch to 20" ATs. *OR* get the Premium trim with 20"s (albeit a different 20" wheel) or PAY $2000 more for the same 21" wheel that is standard on the performance. grrr... How about make the 20's that are standard on the premium, available on the performance at a price reduction?

I will go with the 20”. I like the Black Sand wheels, and prefer the better ride that more sidewall provides. More tire choices too. I will replace the tires with AS at some point - sooner rather than later if i really dislike to stock tires, can always sell them . Been very happy with Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 on my 4Runner, and would not hesitate to get them again.

Not sure how much diff it will make on the R2, but I made a 1” smaller tire change on my Corvette, and the ride was significantly better - immediately noticeable. Had nothing but trouble with the lower profile. Now they are perfect. (in this case, I went back to the original spec. GM for some reason increased the tire size at some point during production. Never made sense to me.)

Besides better ride, the sheer number of available tires allows you to pick what you want. Heres another shocker, all tire options available for the 20 are less than the 21 option. I plan to go to defenders as soon as they are ready to be replaced. I have the defenders on my R1 and they are amazing. I will get 55-60k miles out of them.

20's, both for snow and noise dampening on roads with even the slightest of seams. The R1S 22s not only pick up every single one but feel like the United regional jet that just landed on a school sidewalk. (da-boom, da-boom, da-boom)

Aren’t the 20” off-road knobby tires? I’m concerned they will be noisy and the EPA range is less than with the 21” wheels. Seems like replacing the off-road tires with all season street tires would be the best of both worlds (unless you plan to go off-road). The 20” with more rubber between the rim and the road will ride better.

$1000 for the 20" tires and $1500 to swap out for 4 all seasons. That's a lot of money for something the Premium comes with standard.

They're "mild" AT's from all I have seen/read/heard. And what video there is seems to describe them as quiet/smoother than many AT options FWTW.

You forgot the $4,000 from Premium to Performance.

So Premium 20” AS to Performance 20” AS is $6,500 upcharge for swanky wheels and less restrictive software.

I’ll go with the 20’s this time for sure! The tire is a TA not a true All Terrain and should not be nearly as noisy as on the R1 series… That being said I had the 21’s on my T and got a little over 46k miles and was pleased with them until I needed to replace them… Only the stock Pirellis were out for replacement at over $2,600 for the set of 4. I found a local owner selling a full set of the 20” with AT’s that had a little under 20k on them and got those swapped for significantly less than the 21” tires were going to run.
Ran those noisy things for over 20k additional miles then swapped to 5 Michelin Defenders matching the spare I picked up with the set… I got those 5 Michelin 20’s for roughly $800 less than the 4 21’s (3-4 options out finally by then)!
So yes you will make the $1k difference up within the first set or definitely by the second and have way more options to choose from on the 20” wheel.
You can also pull the aggressive tire off and replace with an all season right away and sell them locally, easily recouping at least half (maybe more) of the new tire install. There will be many that will buy take offs discounted from other R2 owners at that time…
I will never buy another 21” tire’d vehicle outside of a high end performance brand group!
