Maybe there's a difference for R1T vs R1S users due to bed vs. rear hatch decision?
I think this makes a huge difference. I specifically checked the OP's flair to make sure he drives an R1S before I commented earlier that a majority of people probably don't use the frunk as much as he does.

Such first world complaints. God forbid that you actually get some stretching exercise by reaching up to close the frunk manually. ;)

As an investor, I applaud Rivian for keeping the build cost and therefore the sales price down by eliminating features that 50% or less of the people would actually use.

I use the frunk a few times a week, mostly for hauling tools, or garbage bags from outdoor trips.

There are half a dozen adaptable solutions waiting on Amazon if you can't reach the hood to close it or it is too hot to touch. And I'm sure that the 3rd party companies here have already read this thread and are working on solutions.

The one thing I use more than any other storage on my R1T is the passthrough storage. Use this exclusively daily for 98% of what I do.

1st world unless you are too short...the R2 is taller than most vehicles. between the lack of oh shit bars and the no way to close the frunk, it will be an issue for older and shorter folks...ideally it would have the same tech as my 10 year old station wagon and kick to open both tailgate and frunk...
A lot of the folks saying adding a tether have probably never used a frunk. it will become an issue for sealing the frunk properly from weather.

Six pages of discussions on a power frunk in a package half the cost of the R1? Get real! If it's too hot to close, wear driving gloves - makes you feel more professional. And if it's too high for your wives to reach, tell her to wear high heels - makes her feel more sophisticated.

People who are saying add a tether have likely had vehicles in the past that had a tether from the factory.

except sealing a tailgate on the bottom where there is not a lot of air pressure and little chance of water running up hill vs sealing a frunk from the front where there is a ton of air pressure, massive overhang between the seal and the lip will be 2 very different scenarios. they will get it right 99.9% of the time, but the time they don't it will be a shit show...

we just won't buy it. stick with the R1T and look for a different option...
there are a few deal breakers, access and usability are very near the top of that list.

It is pretty funny…. If they need a power frunk get an R1S, seriously most vehicles don’t even have a frunk. 🤷🏻

Of course there are other options, you'll just have to pay more for less. Or don't buy at all.

I have to agree with this sentiment. The only time we use the frunks in our Model Y and Model 3 is when we're going down to the beach house for the weekend. We'll load up the trunk first, then put whatever else won't fit in the frunk. At any other time, the trunk is used 100%.

With that said, it's a small price to pay to reach a lower price point on the R2. I wouldn't even pay $1,000 for the feature to have it fully power-operated.
When I got my Model 3, I almost never used the frunk. Then I installed a power frunk kit and used the frunk every time I got takeout or went to the store for the next 3 years. Power frunk makes all the difference in how useful it is. Wish R2 (and Model 3/Y) at least offered as a paid upgrade.

I'm not sure this was entirely monetary savings vs something in the design that made it too big of a "cost". They could have offered it on top trim or as an option, like the tow package or other upgrades that performance got over premium/standard.

On our Tesla model 3 we never use the frunk, on our R1S we use it daily, totally different vehicles and usage demographics. I fully understand why Rivian went with the much cheaper gas struts but also agree they should have added powered open/close as an option for those that desire it.
