I have a 2026 R1T Gen2 dual motor with large battery and NACS charging port. I own the genuine Rivian CCS to NACS adapter ($300+-ouch!) and I've used that adapter successfully at an Electric Era charging station 2 times.
Recently, it looks like RedECharge has taken over several former EVCS chargers. I am taking a trip in the near future and wanted to test my Truck & adapter with their device. I downloaded their app and entered payment information and then tried to charge. I attempted to charge on two different CCS charging devices located at the same charging station (5 CCS charging cables & 1 CHAdeMO cable on 3 charging devices CCS promised 180KW charging). I was unable to get past the communication/negotiation stage, it would always time-out. I also tried using a CC to pay, but I can't say that it worked. I can say that there were 5 $50.00 authorizations (that were refunded) that probably came through the App payment attempts. I will say that the cables were very large and stiff and difficult to manage, which may have contributed to the charging issues.

This appears to be a Michigan based company. Has anyone had success with their chargers on a R1T Gen2? I am going to try another station this week that has one CCS cable and is rated as a 350KW charger. It also appears to be a rebranded EVCS device, but it may be newer.

All feedback is appreciated.

After 3 unsuccessful attempts it will cease to work as a safety precaution. You have to hard reset the vehicle to get it to work after that.

Make sure all connections are fully seated and follow the manufacturer instructions recommending which sides to connect first. What is the actual error you’re getting?

Thanks for responding.

I did not have that experience. The vehicle drove away just fine and then charged at the Electric Era station using the adapter about 20 minutes later.

I tried charging by putting the adapter into the R1T first and then by attaching it to the charger handle and inserting it into the R1T (different attempts). Same result. I think the failure to charge message came after the attempt to initiate the charging session failed. I don't recall the exact message. I will video it at my next attempt.

At the Electric Era charger, I plugged the Rivian CCS to NACS adapter into the R1T first and then plugged the CCS handle into the adapter...and it worked just fine, so it seems that it wasn't the adapter or the R1T. The evidence suggests the RedECharger device or the connection between the CCS handle and the adapter (the cable was super stiff and heavy).

UPDATE:
I successfully charged at a Red E Charger in Mt. Vernon, WA after the failure to charge in Sedro Woolley, WA. It was a different type of "Red E Charge" charger station, it had a thinner cable (easier to manipulate). It was a CCS handle/plug. I first inserted my CCS to NACS adapter into my R1T (2026 R1T Gen2 with NACS plug) and then inserted the CCS handle into the adapter. There was only one cable at this station. The display then prompted me to choose the charging station (CCS1 in this case) on a small black payment box just below the screen (easy, as it was the only option). I pushed on the lighted "button" for CCS1. There was an option to pay with a CC, but I don't think that was operational. I used my Red E Charge app and picked "DC 6384 CCS1" (the only one there that was operational). The charging session negotiated and then started charging. Hooray (simple pleasures - LOL). It was only at 57KWH, but I didn't precondition my battery beforehand as this was only a test to see if I could charge.

They just opened up a group of "Red-E " charging stations on Broadway in Fall River MA (for me, about 2 miles from the house). Stopped to check them out this morning.

So... $5.00 for privilege of a session and $0.50kw at no more than 120kw per hour... CCS only (no NACS here). I looked at the map on the Red-E app and these chargers appears to be in "off the beaten trail" locations. I am liking this to the gas station ATM; access to cash with high overhead .

This particular location is in a... less desirable section of Fall River (there are better locations?) and sponsored by a real estate agency. Others are sponsored by a bank, the local community college, etc. I do not know if the session and idle fees are different for other locations.

I went to Tesla in Freetown this morning to charge up, and my session was $0.28kW, no session fee and I got 210kW (to start).

I got the Red-E app on my phone. Just in case...

Just as an FYI, this is the opposite way of how you should do this (for any adapters for charging your EV really...). Plug the charging cable into the adapter, then that into your vehicle. For reference, check the manual/owner's guide for your CCS to NACS adapter, page 8:

FWIW, the instructions for the A2Z Typhoon Pro are to plug the adapter into the car first, then plug the charger into the adapter. I primarily use the A2Z and use the OEM as a backup.

LOL, Yeah, I usually use the "correct sequence", but I was trying anything to get it to work. I've not successfully used a RedE Charger since then (I tried to use the Charging stations in Winthrop WA unsuccessfully in April 2026)

Interesting - wonder why there are differences between the OEM adapter instructions and 3rd party?

I could be wrong but IIRC the latch underneath that Tesla-made OEM adapter becomes locked once it is in port and can’t be pulled towards you to insert plug.

A2Z’s original design had similar instructions to assemble plug and adapter first. But because that adapter had very tight tolerances, they started to advise customers to insert adapter first—effectively turning the car into a 7k+ lb vise, which made handling easier. Through that it just became evident it’s the more ergonomic way and that became the instruction for their redesigned adapter. But both ways still work. I believe Lectron had similar advice when some of their customers had trouble manipulating their trigger style latch. With adapter affixed to car, one could use both hands on the adapter/latch if they find it necessary.

I would say that A2Z is incorrect. The vehicle may get confused as there is something plugged into the vehicle, bit it can't talk to anything as the cable is not connected.

An unenergized adapter being plugged in does nothing. Absolutely nothing. And issue OP encountered reads more like a communication problem on the DCFC network's end at that particular location or day. No handshaking happens until the adapter is energized, because it is just a simple pass-through device with no power source of its own.

I've had three A2Z adapters so far, original, v1 Pro and v2 Pro. All three I've inserted the adapter first regularly. It's a simple routine that allow me to ensure positive insertion of the adapter and plug in separate steps... and doesn't require any thinking or second guessing. v1 Pro had uneven length pins that proved to be incompatible with v4 Superchargers. A2Z provided each replacement free of charge.

First thing to suspect is always the charger, not the adapter. The adapter is a passive, pass-through device.

If you look at those chargers on PlugShare, they get pretty bad ratings, with a lot of people saying they couldn't initiate a charge, with some saying out of service.

In this case I'm sure your problems had nothing to do with you.

I just watched a "The Duke of Middleville" video about charging his R1T using his CCS to NACS adapter (looked like the official Rivian adapter right out of the box). He started by inserting his adapter into his R1T NACS port and then he plugged the CCS charging cable in and it started charging, so it may not matter, unless it doesn't work :( and then "try, try again.."
