I suspect that Rivian estimated that they’d lose something like 15% of their preorders in exchange for making 20% more on what they do eventually deliver - they can’t deliver to backlog that they have so no harm in thinning the queue.
I seriously doubt that 17-20% is merely to cover inflation/higher costs. Seems more like a somewhat more nuanced approach to supply/demand I feel like is happening in many industries - “Hey! We can do less and actually make MORE money!!!”
