I think you are right. Most of us, myself included, are just being a bit impatient and want that immediate gratification so we are searching for reasons why things are not moving as fast as we want them to.

I will say though, regardless of whether the issue is at Normal or at the railyards, it is a problem they will need to solve as they can't afford to have the backlog get too large as that will put pressure on the service centers as well to process deliveries faster. I think I was the first to report an over 3XXX VIN and I've already seen reports of 4XXX VINs within 3 days of my VIN being assigned. Production is moving at a steady clip, the rest of the outbound logistics down the line need to keep pace.
Weird enough, I got my VIN yesterday and it was in the 1800s

mine was in the 1500’s. I wonder if our vehicles might have been marked for an employee purchase (which subsequently didn’t happen).

My delivery team keeps telling me “as soon as we see it leave St. Louis we will be able to schedule delivery”. That tells me the car was trucked from Normal to the rail yard in St Louis to finish the journey West. And it has been sitting in St Louis for at least 3 or 4 days now.
The factory sits on a Norfolk Southern rail yard, so it was probably sent via train to St Louis interchange and is waiting for a new train to take it further. This is what ChatGPT estimated for my Austin, TX delivery (not confirmed with Rivian folks yet):
Rivian Factory (Normal, IL)

Norfolk Southern (origin)

I think VINs are assigned pretty early in the production process. The cars can be assembled in batches rather than strictly being a FIFO (first-in, first-out) process. In other words, similar configurations can be batched together at various stages of assembly so that all the cars with the same drivetrain configuration go through that part of the assembly together, or all the cars with the same paint color go through that stage of assembly together, etc. Of course in this case there aren't many variations in configuration being produced other than paint color and wheels.

Another possibility is that any car which needs some extra work to fix things that weren't done right initially might be held back until the fixes can be performed and then released at the same time as much higher VIN numbers where the assembly went perfectly.

A third possibility is that a whole bunch of cars with a wide variety of VIN numbers might be 99% complete but they're all waiting for some part or assembly operation that's been delayed for some reason. Then all those cars are finished at nearly the same time even though they were started some time apart.

I ordered yesterday and they already assigned me a pickup date for Saturday, which doesn’t quite work because it takes at least 3 days for my bank to get me the funds. App doesn’t let me reschedule. The number that texted me earlier is no responsive. I called customer service to reschedule and was told I’ll get a call back… these people are stressing me out!
There is a email in there on the Delivery in the app, I think it is like [email protected] EMail seems to repsond way quicker IMO

Definitely an issue, unfortunately it is one Rivian has little control over and I have to imagine it is probably one of their top priorities right now.

The biggest impacts to rail capacity are some changes to CDL requirements which has taken drivers off the road and tightened trucking capacity thus increasing OTR rates. And as we all know, increased fuel prices have also increased trucking rates. Either of these factors on their own drive companies to seek alternate modes of transportation from traditional OTR trucks. That means rail transport.

The rail industry has seen one of the biggest increases in usage since pre pandemic. For Rivian this is a perfect storm because not only does it mean it’s harder to find capacity, but even when they do find it, the delays at the rail yards are significantly greater than normal. Increased rail usage in a system that hasn’t been updated for decades is just a recipe for disaster. The rail system appears to be overloaded in every way imaginable and it’s creating worsening bottle necks.

Rivian just needs to start offering a small discount for factory deliveries to alleviate the problem. Kidding but not really.
I picked mine up yesterday, an Employee there just got his last week. He said he saw his sit on the rails for like 10 days and not move, there are issues with the Railway, I don't think Rivian can do anything about that at all...

Mine was 13XX just picked it up yesterday, I was the 3rd delivery out of Duncan, SC. They were telling me I was in like the first 500 of public deliveries, when I pulled up the 2nd delivery was just finishing up. They said they have like 14 scheduled over the next 10 days, 2 more in the shop were getting prepped as we went through all the settings and such...

I also sent this address an e-mail a few weeks ago to ask for an ETA, which they did, and it was spot on.. I would send any delivery questions/changes to this email

I just looked through the Sheet - I saw Bonedaddy's R2 at the Duncan shop yesterday. Looked Nice, I picked up my GW with 21's yesterday and there was a GW with the 20's VIN in the 16XX's

Delivery delayed by a few days - was supposed to arrive today at the SC but now is supposed to arrive Wednesday. So instead of a Monday pick up I tentatively have a Friday pickup.

Must be the same shipment as mine. I was told rail delays, original was 7/15, bumped to 7/19, today was bumped to 7/21.

Their communication during the process has been pretty good. I think the SC arrival dates I’ve been given though are best guess.
