I'll disagree with this.

I don't think a "head must roll" is always the answer. Often, when that is applied, the axe falls on someone who may not actually deserve it -- a scapegoat. We need to modify our culture to be more accepting of mistakes, so long as there is accountability when they occur.

Now, I think there may be an argument to be made that someone has been consistently making bad decisions -- then corrective action is warranted. I'm not saying that someone isn't deserving to move on... I'm simply saying that "there must be a firing" is not inherently the right move.
Can we please acknowledge that there is a difference between making a mistake and "incompetence" or described another way "not being prepared for the level of responsibility"?

I understand what you are saying; people must be allowed to make mistakes and grow from them. There is no other way. But at the higher levels of any endeavor there must be people that make a smaller number of smaller mistakes. There are reasons that people usually start at a somewhat lower level and progress over time in most things. And yes, I know that there are glowing exceptions.

Again, I agree, much damage is done by a culture that seeks to find a scapegoat. Even more damage is done by putting someone in a role that they really are not prepared for and expecting because they are bright, etc. that everything will be ok.

There are rightfully different expectations for the mechanic of the bi-plane which can recover from many mistakes than there is for the maintenance crew of the space shuttle.

The same holds true for the arts. Mistakes must be made at early stages of development. As time goes on, you would expect fewer and smaller mistakes.

The point is that at some level, in virtually all "work", their is a hierarchy of excellence.

Not sure I am understanding. Do you think you shouldn't have to maintain your deposit? If so, why?
I have no problem paying the deposit but that’s what was mentioned. I even clarified as it seemed odd. Probably will have to pay it again once they figure out how to reinstate orders.

This is great news. I sure wish I was getting my emails from them like you guys. I have to get all my "news" from the forum :(
I had some trouble before, too. I wasn't getting the emails from them, and when I wrote customer support, they said they would look into that, and now I get them.

I'm assuming I got myself put on a block list for their email service, because I'm pretty aggressive about unsubscribing to things, and I might have done it by accident.

If you still aren't getting the emails, you might want to reach out to support and let them know. Maybe in a day or so once everything calms down ?

I would like to thank all those who canceled and forced them to roll back their decision. I am concerned about Rivian for the long term though. Yes, mistakes do happen but a mistake of this scale should never happened. They lost confidence in customers, investors. Gonna take years to recover from this unforced debacle.

Have worked with too many accountants who are in decision making roles that actually require more thought than looking at the balance sheet...
Bingo! My engineering company has done significant project work, some years in the 7 figures, with a well-known globally ranked top 70 food manufacturer for 30 years. Prior to around 2007, they had the "very best" engineers, food scientists, etc. and that drove the decisions. Things changed and the "bean counters" have driven the decisions since around 2010. The innovation is gone, technical employees don't take ownership of anything, and much of the technical staff that works there are clueless about how their production lines run. Simply because they are saving money - not hiring and retaining the quality of engineering/technical people they used to before the bean counters seized control. We have seen plant efficiencies drop 2% - 5% just because of this, which I think you know is huge in manufacturing. We get support calls in the middle of the night because something in the plant broke or a sensor went out of calibration, and their tech staff can't figure it out. Sad...

Thanks. I did confirm it was a problem on their end. I got on chat to verify price and handled this while I there. Not that I don't trust the forum. I just neede verification that my price was being honored and it was :)

I am glad I did not cancel... Although I am still mad about it!

But I am concerned that when I log into the website, and check my config, it still shows the 20% higher price.. Hopefully this will get corrected in the coming days.

Now I just need to see the 12% dip in stock prices come back up!

For anyone who canceled or changed their config, I wouldn't expect to see it updated any time soon. It's going to take them time to untangle this and it might involve some manual process. If you're not supposed to have gotten delivery in March/April I wouldn't concern yourself with it for the next week or so.

Great job Rivian. I‘d like to think you saw the error of your ways in an after action review format and came to this conclusion and not the stock price/number of cancellations, but I think you‘ve done right by me. I’m back in.

Seems like a lot of people canceled, like more than 20% and they need to get those numbers back up by the end of the week so they don't completely tank when they release their earnings results next week. With no deposit it's a no brainer to reinstate my reservation.
