I predict I will pass on P2P, especially in a non-Lidar equipped vehicle, and especially especially if I have to pay a monthly or yearly subscription for it. I predict a licensed 16-year old chauffeur will be safer, if not cheaper, considering their room and board, though I could be wrong. In any event, it will be interesting to see who is the safer driver, which one learns faster, and how the insurance industry rates the P2P software vs. 16-24 year-olds.

Exactly. I'm rooting for Rivian, but I'm holding off on my R2 purchase until it's full self driving capabilities are active and proven. As Gen 1 owners, we know the burn.

Well that's disappointing. They kept insisting it was rolling out this year. I guess technically the can say they are right but if its not in all delivered R2s that sucks. Also 2027 is an extremely vague timeline for full rollout.

Considering Tesla took over 14 years, I'd cut Rivian a bit of slack.

You should test drive a new Tesla. The system is very confidence inspiring. Definitely feels safer than my kids, my wife and I. I was shocked at how good it was. Of course it’s only safe until something weird happens, but one can clearly see that it is only a matter of time before no human participation is required, ever. If Rivian has the cash to invest one assumes they will achieve the same result eventually.

Teslas current FSD is way better than any new teen driver. It’s way better than most drivers - it’s shocking how good it is and makes me think that my 7 years old may never have to drive a car. My wife’s HW4 (most current hardware) model S has 12xxx miles of self driving on it and we are at about 97% or more usage so basically using it all the time. It’s not the greatest at parking in a large parking lot yet but other than that it’s pretty flawless. It drives better than I do since I don’t have eyes in the side or back of my head and the ability to see 360 degrees all at once.

This is good information, and it is encouraging for Rivian. Yet, as a person who has a reservation, possibly with a delivery in December, for the R2 Premium with Launch Package, I wonder if not having LIDAR installed would drastically decrease the value of my vehicle. Any thoughts/opinions? Thanks!

Sure sounds familiar…. Heard this as I waited for my R1 to be delivered.. promising it would be available “soon”.

Yep ... still waiting for all the Driver+ promises for my Gen 1 R1S to come true. At least it wasn't an extra "option" that I had to pay extra for but was called out in multiple Rivian videos/web pages, but disappointing nonetheless.

Not gonna happen. Give yourself a Comma 4 this xmas. Gen1 and Driver+ hardware (older MobileEye) production ended spring of '24. By the numbers, there's no business case for Rivian put any more development dollars behind any Gen1 hardware.

Launch Edition is the Performance trim with the tow package, Autonomy+, and key fob rolled into the cost of the trim. Also the choice of Launch Green for extra.

I have, it is, and that is the problem. It inspires confidence in owners who then reduce their attention to the road such that when they have to suddenly take over they react later than if they had been actually driving the car, and that can result in an accident. They start to treat it like an L4 system when in reality it is L2, which is very different.

I am sure that RJ is aware of the risks but not sure how he is going to avoid the trap that Tesla has fallen into.

I have Gen 1 so it doesn't affect me but I don't believe Rivian has the talent or data that Tesla has to even come close to what FSD is offering. I drove a M3 HW4 back in February with FSD and was blown away and the versions coming out now are far better. Rivian can't even recognize a traffic light and has to rely on the car in front to move for it's "Go Chime" feature. Prepare to be underwhelmed when they do the rollout.

Ultimately insurance companies or the gov't is going to step in and regulate everything.
