Hello all, this may be a stupid question, but like my mama told me there’s no such thing as a stupid question only stupid people.

Is there a way to change the default amperage for at home charging from 48 Amp to another setting? I have a ChargePoint Home Flex that’s plugged into a 14-50 Nema rated outlet, and it’s on a 50 amp breaker. And the real rate for is 40 (80%*50), but the Rivian keeps changing every time I enter and exit the vehicle. There seems to be no way to save my charging speed at home. Is this a bug? Am I missing something?

What do you have your ChargePoint set to.? I don’t have a ChargePoint, but my tesla wall connector and wallbox unit have internal dip switches to set the max amperage. When you have your EVSE plugged into a Nema 1450 outlet, the dip switches should be set to 40 A. The vehicle then should negotiate with your ChargePoint and see that that is the max amperage I can deliver. on the ChargePoint app, or you see more than 40 A being polled?

For this, change the charger settings (call chargepoint), not the car.

It is set to 50 Amps through the app and charges at 9.6 kW. I am just confused because you can set the charging speed within the truck, and I didn't know if it would try to pull more than my charger can output.

It won’t. The EVSE tells the truck the most it can provide. As long as your EVSE is properly configured you’re fine.

The 9.6kw would be 40amps x 240v, so I don't think you need to worry about changing the charge speed on the truck. Your evse can only supply the 9.6kw.

That’s good to hear, it’s nice to see that it’s adjustable within the Rivian for higher or lower charges, but I just can’t seem to find a way to save it. But it’s good to know that it won’t try to overload my system or pull more.

You can reduce current in the UI charging screen, but there's a pretty bad bug right now where it not only forgets what you last set it to, but defaults to 34A, which is above the rating of the mobile connector. I reach in and check and fix it every time I plug in.

That’s what I’ve been experiencing as well, except it doesn’t save when I lower it to 40, it just defaults every time. It doesn’t seem to save my seat settings either

you need to set it to 40A in the Chargepoint app as others mentioned. Even though you’re connected to a 50 amp circuit, you need to derate the current draw to 80%. You’re at risk of overheating and potentially starting a fire.

Some version(s) of the app ask for the size of the breaker itself (50A), not the max load (40A). Seems this may have changed along the way but I don't recall at this point.

My ChargePoint app still does that, they make it a little confusing because it asked for the breaker amp, it makes it look like you’re selecting 50A when in reality it’s derated to 40A.

I hope they fix this issue as well, I'm using a tesla wall charger, but I don't want to charge daily at the max of 48 amps. The Rivian just runs too hot when charging in a small closed garage. I would like to charge at around 24 amps most of the time as it's way less heat, and by morning it will be all charged anyway.

I hope Rivian gets a fix in soon so you can set the default max value.
