Any idea if there will be a first come first served angle on the shop? Meaning if you're late to shop, but have an early preorder, could someone way behind you get a vehicle faster by shopping quicker?
It sounds like it's not going to be like grabbing concert tickets online or craps on Woot! More likely it is something more like what they've been doing informally through the guides but trying to avoid the '40 days from order to delivery' problem. When your order number and geography put you at the top of the list to enter the store there may be build combinations already in production different from your current reservation you can claim to get a vehicle a few weeks sooner. Like 6-8 weeks sooner, which to me 6-8 weeks sounds like the lag time between a VIN birth date and delivery (...and not just for Rivian)....BUT...since they are batching colors and interiors there may be people close behind you in the queue that would be happy with VINs in a batch already in production but not assigned to a customer, so...yes someone behind you in the queue may 'jump ahead'. Likely it will be someone a few days or weeks behind you instead of a few years....

RJ on the delivery problem: "very late changes to a customers order create an unmatched Rivian where we need to go find a customer for that...so it may actually pull an order that's a recent pre-order that gets a vehicle s00ner because of that 'second matching'..."

Think the shop is trying to avoid this problem by offering priority to those with earlier pre-order dates rather than geography...

Take this with however many grains of salt you want, but I just boarded a Chicago to LA flight and saw that one of the other passengers had a unique First Mile sweatshirt on. I was an unapologetic stalker and introduced myself as a Nov 2018 pre-order holder. She said that she works for Rivian “off and on” (not sure exactly what that means) and knew about Tony’s email when I mentioned it. She asked me whether I was a T or S preorder holder, and when I said “S”, she started sadly shaking her head. I asked if I should be prepared for a 2023 delivery (context: I was originally given a March/April 2022 window) and she said…yes.

Log into your account and chat with CS. (Don't do it today, the queue is long)
Nearly everyone with a pre-order prior to Dec got an email before the end of 2021 with a delivery window estimate.
Nope!

2018 pre-order, can't get much closer to the factory than Chicago (relative to the rest of the country) ... if you're prepping for a 2023 R1S, so are the rest of us :(.

Wait for official news before getting too deflated. When I was at the First Mile event in December the people being contracted to run the event really did not know anything, they would call over the Rivian employees to answer any questions. If they say they work off and on, sounds like they were First Mile event contractors.

FWIW they are contracted employees like car show personnel and they may not know the latest information to add to the grain of salt.

If true it poses more questions about questionable behavior- showcasing the S at the shareholder meeting, letting the tech sisters release their R1S review, stringing along all the S order holders…that kind of stuff makes institutional shareholders mad…

Hopefully she’s in the dark because she works off and on as a guide or in CS ?

My guess would be second hand information from Rivian employees. I'm sure some of the contractors would become friends with Rivian employees and share gossip etc.

If they can’t get out at least the LE R1S I am not sure how it is anything other than a choice to screw half the reservation base with the hope they get a bunch of cancellations.

Just to throw out another scenario - I’m a Dec 2019 R1S LE preorder. I’m supposedly a June/July delivery (although I hadn’t had any guide contact). I got the same email on Monday and interestingly my account now showed a guide (which wasn’t there Sunday and hasn’t reached out yet) ??‍♂ maybe all news won’t be bad …
