The Recon looks like a logical next step to combat the inevitable EV Bronco and convert their brand loyal Wrangler buyers. It will sell well and keep pushing everyone to make better electric adventure vehicles. That's a good thing. EV off-roading is why we buy the Rivian trucks in the first place.

I'll take the other side of the trade from the pessimism...

I love how you can take the doors off the Recon, open all the glass, and open the roof. I wish the R1S could do that. I really don't like the glass roof. I want the roof to open, or come off.

Those kind of things are going to be the things legacy car companies do better, because the are already doing something similar and can just reuse existing designs. Yes you start with a clean slate when you start with nothing, but you also make a lot of mistakes others have already made, and take a lot longer to get a product out the door.

It is extremely disappointing to me that Rivian is no longer considering the removable roof.

As a stockholder who has lost a crap ton of money, I hope Rivian can make a vehicle that remains competitive. Soon, I am afraid it won't be able to keep up with the competition.

If Jeep makes the Recon as proposed, it will be a better alternative for many people in the space Rivian is trying to serve, including me. And that is really bad news for Rivian.
I’d hold judgment until we see what Rivian has planned for the R2 line. The Recon is in no way a direct competitor to the R1S other than “electric” and “off-road”. They are different size and price categories. A Rivian competitor to this will need to be a third model, not simply an R1S or R1T with a removable roof.

The Wagoneer S will be the real competitor to the R1S and it doesn’t have removable everything like the Recon.

Let's see if this move causes Rivian designers to rethink the upcoming R1.

Impressive.
I see 4xe everywhere. This should be selling really well.
Not a fan of that look. Side note: I've read nothing but bad things about the 4xe. We bought a used '19 Rubicon and then I saw a 4xe and was intrigued. But lots of issues being reported. I'm content with the '19 until my badlands reservation is delivered.

It's a Jeep thing... I have no desire to EVER understand.

/r/heep is pretty interesting place.
My biggest question is how they are going to make sure it leaks oil because everyone knows if it ain't dripping oil, it ain't a Jeep.

To be fair a lot of the legacy automakers are moving to panoramic glass roofs (that don't open) as a feature. I guess it's cheaper and (Edit: It's not cheaper, stupid thought) some people don't mind but I'm with you that I would rather have a roof that I can open
It might be cheaper compared to a panoramic roof that opens. Same amount of glass, but it is divided into two pieces, one of which needs to move.

Also, the opening ones typically have a motorized shade. Another great feature that I must have because of my wife. And a feature typical in legacy SUVs, and one Rivian probably won't offer.

I am a shareholder, but not an order holder yet. I have been waiting for the R1S max pack version and removable roof. Since the removable roof has been cancelled, at least temporarily (I hope), now I am waiting to see what they do with the max pack version of the S. And waiting. And waiting. Meanwhile, here comes the Recon.

Is Rivian going to end up only making vans for Amazon?

Most people don’t do much research. Wranglers have always been known to be unreliable and yet they are everywhere.
I loved my ’19 Rubicon (kept it 2 years, longer than most other cars I’ve had). That Bronco will be sweet, enjoy!!

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I would say vans in general since it seems like they struck a deal with MB.

Rivian’s head of design came from jeep. They likely have some inside knowledge of Jeep’s roadmap

Oh man same boat! I was going to put in a deposit when they first opened up but I couldn't get over the head lights.

Fast forward to watching "a long way up" with the Rivian engineering samples 1 and 2.. it kept growing on me and growing on me. Wife finally said, "yeah i like that Rivian, you should get one"

1 R1T in the garage and a R1S for her sometime next year.
