Good start to second week with the truck. Currently about 825 miles on it:

Currently waiting on a tow.

They are gonna have fun getting it out of my garage, won’t even go into neutral.

@M4H4X I’m sorry to hear about the trouble with your truck. :(

Not having some way of putting an EV in neutral during a critical failure seems to be a common issue. There was a similar problem when the TFL Hummer locked up.

I wonder if Rivian could enable a close-to-neutral mode which could be activated with only the 12v battery: electric parking brakes off and rear motors disconnected. That would leave whatever physical resistance the unpowered front motors and gearing have towards motion.

surely whoever is towing it is not dumb enough to not have skates/dollies available.

surely whoever is towing it is not dumb enough to not have skates/dollies available.
The potential problem is clearance with the garage door. I know our Rivian will just fit under our garage door frame. Definitely not on skates/dollies though.

Techs advice was to wait 30 minutes after 2 hard resets and try the truck again.

Now it’s completely dead, haha.

My money is on 12v battery issue.

edit: Actually it’s not dead. I can hear it chiming inside (the error chime) when I press the fob unlock, but no screens and no key works to unlock it.

edit2: oop now that’s dead too

My money is on 12v battery issue.
Perfect use case for everyone involved for this to be a mobile service appointment.

It may be worth it to have an extra 12v battery around for modern EVs. The 12v Battery died after 3 1/2 years service in my Model 3 last summer. Tesla Mobile Service came and replaced it in my driveway under warranty and the next day the replacement died. Tesla sent out another tech and this time was the charm. 12v batteries just fail. I still don’t understand why they engineer a 12v battery into the 12v circuit when it seems to me a simply step down transformer module could suffice somewhere.

While I’m waiting on the second tow attempt, I used the pigtail to get enough power to unlock it, got my stuff out, but can’t get the frunk to pop. The manual release cable is hidden behind a trim panel that looks like it won’t come off without breaking. I’ve got a teslatap, tesla charger, and a whole bunch of adapters in the frunk I wish I could get out.

I think the lightning is going to be a better truck. It may be slower and less “advanced”, but it has a manual door lock and key, and a manual frunk release, and 12v battery access right in the frunk.

Just seems better engineered.

This was discussed in an interview with a Kia EV engineer. He said it is part of a safety philosophy. They want to be able to 100% disconnect the primary battery in a failure/emergency situation but still have 12 volt control power.
