Suggestion: If you pay the $4/mo fee the cost goes down from $0.43 to $0.31 /kWh. You would have saved almost $9 on just this one charge (if it wasn't free). The monthly fee pays for itself if you charge even once per month, and you can always not pay for a month if you don't plan on going anywhere.

Assuming you can get the app to communicate with the charger….. last 3 times I’ve charged at EA, I could not get the app to connect with the charger. So I was charged the higher rate.

That's crazy expensive; here (in PA) they charge by minute (32c) so that would have been less than half.

Suggestion is use let EA add a widget to your mobile wallet (assuming compatible device). This is my go to >90% of the time with EA.
If the reader isn’t working then I go to starting from the app.
Finally if I can’t get the app to connect I just call EA and have them start the session. Like 2 times in hundreds of EA charges and one of those is because I couldn’t get a data connection in Frisco CO. Never have I ever paid with a CC.

Yeah, feels good. About 2 months ago I found a charger like that while on vacation. I filled up 3 times. I didn’t know if it was a promotion or what.

I have that subscription ($4/month) since the first day of having R1T and after 21.000+ miles driven, it’s WELL worth but I never received a free charging session from EA ‘ til now.

Not at all of them. The EA site I have used about 10 times now charges by kWh. And EVgo just switched over to a VERY expensive tiered per kWh rate also tied to time of day. Makes even the full price EA look like a bargain.

That said, I have used EA chargers on trips about 15 or so times now. All but 1 of those have been complimentary charging, so my miracle is getting a bill from EA. Not complaining.

The free chargers don't let you use the app so won't show if you have a membership.

Sometimes the calculations when free are flat out wonky

All 6 of my sessions were free this weekend, courtesy of my Rivian still being in service and taking the Polestar instead, which has a free charging plan. Had to stop more often though.

I have had a few free, including one that I kicked off from the app after several failed attempts and it never charged me.

I find it kind of wild that these are free often as stated here. I can’t imagine ever getting free gas. I wonder how long this lasts.

On one hand from a supply and demand perspective, it seems like there are not a ton of DC charging options, so the supply limit doesn’t seem to provide much reason to incentivize the use of a given charger or attempt to encourage brand loyalty.

However, if they are trying to incentivize to close the gap on home charging or free L2 charging, I guess I could see it.

Either way, I guess we should just enjoy.

I have had several complimentary sessions from EA. I finally installed a home charger so I haven't been using them much lately but my last session was free. I have been wondering what the logic is. Are there promotions that I don't know about? Is it just random? Sometimes it seems to happen after a session fails to start and I shuffle over to the next charger. Is there something to that? What is the deal with these guys?

Lots of times they make the stations free if they are having network issues or have a lot of people that have to call in for a particular area to reboot the chargers. They tend to work better when free since the communications between the charger and the vehicle aren't hindered by waiting for payment processing or any kind of verification to occur.

Was about to reply with the same. I fear our cheap charging in PA is coming to an end, though I haven't found any EA chargers that have switched to kWh pricing. EVgo was expensive before, but now they are outrageous. I avoid them when possible (unfortunately for our monthly trip to visit family we have to use EVgo now due to an EA station being offline, but hopefully that will change in the next month or so). The only good thing about kWh pricing vs time is when you get stuck with a slow charger you are only losing time and not also money.
