They just posted a video of a bunch of trucks and SUVs testing the dual motor at the same time this announcement came out. It wasn't a coincidence.
seems like they are specifically showcasing the off-road capability of the dual motor.

I think I’m finally going to punch out of my ‘21 max pack order. I’m going to take it out on our planet and order a Ram TRX.
Why not get the dual motor max pack? Pretty sure the Ram is "dual" motor too

max pack sounds more like a LARGE+ or extra grande. I guess the water was cold and there was shrinkage.

Or you can get some significant money off, stay with the Max Pack, and get dual motor instead of quad. That seems like the most logical play here. Especially considering the main use case for quad motors is extreme rock crawling and extreme off-road conditions. The dual motor should be just fine for 99% of people.
I was probably never going to go slick rock crawling, but I do want to be able to drive heavily rutted Forest Service roads and muddy ones. Mostly what I want is 400+ miles of EV range and the ability to haul a light weight camping trailer. So it sounds like the dual motor Max pack shoud be just fine for me, right?

I've never been an off roader other than occasional wood gathering in the Uinta mountains of northern Utah, so I've never paid a lot of attention to various technical specs. Performance-wise, what is the difference between a dual motor and a quad motor?

Dual motor plus max pax sounds perfect for your situation.

Just got the following email. Worst outcome... time for reevaluation...

Hi,
As a Max pack preorder holder, we want to thank you for being on this journey with us as we work toward delivering your vehicle. As we continue to advance our technology and evolve our product line, we want to share updates as early as possible to help you plan.

Updates we plan to make early next year:
R1T with Max pack will only be available in a Dual-Motor AWD configuration.
Max pack with standard Dual-Motor AWD will have a target range around 400 miles, 600 HP and 0-60 mph as quick as 4.5 seconds.¹ We will also offer an enhanced version of Dual-Motor AWD with the same range that increases horsepower to 700 HP and lowers 0-60 mph to as quick as 3.5 seconds.¹ Both versions maintain the R1T’s 11,000 lbs of towing capacity.
For price committed customers who preordered before 3/1/2022, choosing standard Dual-Motor AWD will lower your current price by $4,500 while the enhanced version will lower it by $2,000. Deliveries are planned to start at the end of summer in limited volumes and will ramp through the end of the year. We will prioritize Max pack preorder holders for our earliest Dual-Motor deliveries where it’s possible.
Quad-Motor + Max pack will not be selectable in the configurator beginning in early 2023. We plan to add a Quad-Motor with additional capability at a later date that will pair with the Max pack. We will release pricing for this new variant closer to launch.
This update introduces a more energy dense Max pack design that pairs with our Dual-Motor drive system to deliver long range with outstanding performance at a lower price point. Making this change supports our continued focus on simplifying the production process as we scale.
At this time, no action is required on your part. We simply wanted to notify you early to make you aware. We plan to reach back out in January with details on updating your configuration and when you can expect your delivery timing estimate.

If you prefer to maintain a Quad-Motor configuration — and the possibility to accelerate your delivery date to early 2023 — we recommend changing your R1T configuration to Quad-Motor + Large pack, capable of an EPA-est. 328 miles of range when paired with 21” wheels. If you make this selection now, your new delivery window estimate will be made available in January during our next scheduled timing update.

Look for an email in January with next steps. Of course, if you have questions in the meantime, please contact our team – we are here to help. We want to make sure you have everything you need to help you get into your Rivian as soon as possible. Thanks again for being on this journey with us.

*Ranges provided are preliminary manufacturer estimates based on the EPA test cycle and are not official EPA values except where noted. Vehicle range varies with final vehicle selections and other conditions.

¹Acceleration timing estimates depend on tire selection and battery pack. Dual-Motor figures are projections and are subject to change at any time.
Wonder when we'll see changes to the quad motor R1S.

Interesting this dropped today, since the wife and I were going to sit down and put in an order tonight. The intent was a R1T Quad MaxPack ...

I was really into the performance of the Quad, and the extra range. I knew it was probably a long wait, but we've got our two cars (see profile) till mid-2024. I figured BTT the Quad/Max was available, they were also have the tonneau cover resolved/improved in some way as well as maybe a few more improvements.

Anyway, it now seems to be a decision of max range vs. max performance (both on and off road).

Owning a BEV I get the desire for more range, though our "big trip" is Orlando (Universal and/or MCO) several times a year, about 260-270 miles round trip, so the Large Battery is probably pretty close (and we usually charge for free right at the resorts).

I think I'm more into the performance than another 70-ish miles of range, so maybe I'll stick with the quad option[?]

FWIW, this is the current configurator options - no pricing mention (as expected of the Dual "performance" option):

Rivian R1T R1S Update: Your Max Pack Preorder - R1T’s Max Pack only available w/ Dual-Motor. Unavailable w/ Quad-Motor starting 2023 1671578259691

It is still vague which.... Grrr....

Am I still able to hold out for max quad at my price, or am I forced out of it now?
Even if the email was more clear...can you really trust what Rivian states? I don't think anyone should rely on what Rivian publishes. I would just make decisions based on what is currently available. The fact is...this company can't be relied on.

I'm sure Rivian has made these changes to help the bottom line/production, etc...They will do what they need to survive...we enthusiasts just have to keep that in my mind when planning.

Rivian will offer the new Enduro “standard” 600 HP version or the “enhanced” 700 HP version for an enhanced price premium.

It’s most likely identical motors with a software tweak to get the extra 100 HP. Tesla offers a Model Y over the air performance update for $2k. Marketing at its finest.

I know this probably isn't exactly what max pack order holders wanted to hear, but I feel like this isn't such a bad deal. It almost made me wish I had a max pack order myself. I'm not sure what else they could have done to be honest.... Whatever they chose would please some people but not others.

Although another somewhat incomplete email that doesn't even mention whether current quad motor max pack orders can keep that configuration

Well that would seem to answer the question about whether the quad/ max is still a thing. I doubt they will make them only for pre-existing orders. I take this to mean those people need to choose between the 2 options Rivian offered in the email.

Hi,
We are screwing you out of the Max Pack just like we did the R1S people. You waited even longer than they did, man we kept your hopes alive didn't we.
SUCKERS...

*lotsa legal stuff here that no one cares about* Oh and BTW our stock, it's still going down. SUCKERS.....
I couldn't read your original email, so I fixed it knowing what they were saying.

Yep, time to re-evaluate.

First off - good news for people that have been waiting. $4500 off and you get the max pack as early as 2023 instead of 2024. Yeah, Dual motor instead of Quad but you can still have TRX Power. Interesting that the tow rating is unchanged, even though the Max will have more weight onboard.

Anybody saying they "need" Quad Motor for off-roading....Look at that video. You need lockers and 4-Low to do more than this. The Quad struggles off-road without lockers and low range - there's video out there. I bet the Dual will be just as capable.

This is pretty much what I want to do too. I've got no problem with going to dual motor to get extra range, but as others have mentioned they absolutely must have a locking diff option.
Some people have an opinion that a 2 motor setup with a mechanical diff is superior than having software try and guess the torque split off road. I personally have no knowledge on the topic, but its worth thinking about.

Unsurprised the camp kitchen is cancelled - it was way overpriced for what it is. You can get induction cookers from your local hardware shop for a couple hundred bucks, and build a DIY setup (like I've seen a few people here do already)

Mind you I live in Australia, and we're at least 2 years from getting Rivians here, so who knows what else will change between then and now..
