I never had a short in a Juicebox, but I had probably like 5 warranty replacements because the GCFI protection circuit kept tripping. It would always leave me stranded since my car would not be charged overnight.

Finally went with Chargepoint. Never had an issue since

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I have had terrible luck with our 2 Juiceboxes. Both trip a ground fault regularly. One is 2’ away on 6ga copper from the breakout panel.

I don't use a juicebox but i haven't seen anything like this with my EVSE (Autel Maxicharge).

Given the other comments here it seems like they're poorly manufactured. I don't think there's any history of people seeing the R1 not respect the EVSE current limits - and if it didn't I would expect the main breaker to blow anyway. There's really not much in these boxes besides some wiring and a contactor.

I had a Tesla Gen 3 charger which worked fine for 2 years. Charged new R1S twice using a Lectron adaptor and the Tesla Charger failed.

For a replacement, considering either a Tesla J1772 wall charger (still have the Tesla and it has a Tesla manufactured J1772 to Tesla adaptor) or the Rivian Wall Charger. Alternatively, the standard Tesla wall charger is cheap now ($350) with another adaptor but worried about another failure using this combo. What would you do?

Odd that it failed, I wonder if it was just a strange coincidence. I put a charger with a J1772 connector and use the adapter for my Model S, it has been working fine so you should be fine if you go that direction.

I recently install both chargers, the Rivian at my house and the Tesla at a friend’s house. The Rivian is OK, but definitely a first generation design. It doesn’t have a good way to lock down the hardwired cable, for instance. It is also too expensive now. The Tesla is a third generation design. They have now thought of everything and it is one of the cheapest premium manufacture 48 A units in the market. It also allows you to share a circuit among more than one EV, which is nice to have.

I have never liked Juicebox. I bought one of their original ones, it was a completely crappy design which I ended up throwing out and replaced with a Clipper Creek (bullet proof, maybe the best manufacturer).

I just installed the Chargepoint Flex to replace the melted JuiceBox. I like the integration with the Chargepoint app from Rivian. The only hiccup is the Chargepoint has the NEMA 14-50 ground wire flipped compared to the JuiceBox, I had to take apart the outdoor 14-50 receptacle and flip it. NEMA 14-50 cable is also only a foot long. Hoping no more melting chargers (knock on wood).

When I was flipping the 14-50 receptacle for the Chargepoint, the ground wire popped out, the screw wasn't tightened at all (I didn't install the receptacle). Could a loose ground wire cause this? I made sure to tighten all the wires in the receptacle before putting it all back.

Yes loose wires can lead to arcing which can certainly lead to hardware failure. Also if there was a surge or something else was going on it's possible the current had no way to ground, thus resulting in failure as well.

I just fixed my Juicebox 40 after the Rivian shorted it. If anyone is interested in photos and the repair as well why I think it burned itself I can do a full write up

Your explanation doesn’t really make sense. All EVSEs (like the juicebox) tell the vehicle it is connected to what the maximum current draw it can output. So even if the Rivian‘s settings were the default 48A, the Rivian would have tried to draw only 40A since that’s what the juicebox would have told it the maximum draw was.

Did it fry the first time you tried charging with it at your house?
