How do you get in your R1? (PaaK, FOB, Card, crowbar, windows...)

Delivery is imminent and one of the things that I'm curious about is the PaaK / FOB issue.

I don't believe anything in the Rivian will approximate the security + convenience I'm used to on our '15 eGolf with capacitative handles and proxy key fobs. It's WONDERFUL to walk up to the car every time with the key fob in my bag/pocket and have the car unlock in the half second between touching the handle and pulling on it.

What's your style? PaaK with home geo-fenced? Key FOB only? The ever-elusive wrist band?

Unfortunately none of the Rivian options really compare to your eGolf experience. That really is the ideal setup. Only thing I’d change is allow the PaaK to substitute a fob. Perfection.

Rivian of course has no capacitive sensors in the handles, so sadly the ideal is not attainable.

A lot of people seem happy with proximity PaaK. I prefer to unambiguously tell my truck when to lock/unlock. I don’t like carrying a fob, and touching a card to the handle all the time isn’t convenient. That leaves me with opening the app and pressing the lock/unlock button directly. Not fun, but given the options this is the best one for me.

I haven't taken delivery yet so don't have any personal experience but there are quite a few posts around here to the contrary. Perhaps things have improved.

The only time I had an issue with PAAK is when I was chatting it up and left my phone in the sun and it shut off due to the heat. Fortunately I carry the key card in my wallet for backup, otherwise would have had to wait for my phone to cool down.

PAAK has been working mostly flawlessly for me for a while now. The only times it really has issues is if I'm doing something and have my phone on me right on the edge of the sensor range and it will lock/unlock/lock etc. In terms of walking up or away in a parking lot I basically never use the physical key anymore.

1. Key Card remains in wallet which is almost always in my pocket...never had to use it, but just in case.

2. I carry the FOB about 90% of time; old habit and it has two keys on a key ring linked to it which are used daily.

3. PAAK is always on and always with me.

My typical routine is to let the proximity sensor auto-lock the R1T doors upon exit - always listening for the "tweet" about 30 paces from the vehicle. Upon approach, if the proximity sensor doesn't auto-unlock the doors by the time I reach the door handle then a quick press on my iPhone to power it on almost always instantly unlocks the R1T. Occasionally, it is more convenient to press the unlock button on the FOB in lieu of reaching for my phone.

I've really no complaints about this system, but color me old school and believer in redundancy. Two is One and One is None. YMMV.

My truck doesn't do this often, but I can guarantee that if it does the fastest way to get it to unlock is to reach for my phone. As soon as my hand touches my phone it unlocks. It's like the truck is messing with me.

Paak for me with the key card as a backup. Never had to use the key card. The phone works perfect all the time.
