Come on Rivian, speed up deployment:

“Tesla-style charging port standard on its vehicles, starting in 2025.”
Honestly, an adapter is no big deal. It also means you can charge at CCS-only stations for the foreseeable future where not all Tesla can charge.

Best news ever! Now hopefully Rivian will continue to put the RAN network in all the right places, so we can all enjoy the best of both worlds. This really is GREAT news for all EV drivers and huge step forward to standardization.

I think I am going to pass on my October Delivery. Price has gone up 15k and Teslas have been getting cheaper. I can wait for things like charging systems to get better.

Is there any chance there can be a standard location for the charging port on EVs and when is the earliest this could happen? 2026?

I wonder if there will be a way to upgrade the charge port on our trucks so we don’t have to have an adapter.
I doubt it. We will likely see NACS Rivians with a new charge port on the front/passenger side. So any parts made wouldn’t fit. It also wouldn’t make sense to build out a retrofit path as the adapter will be a lot cheaper. I wont mind the adapter.

I would really love to be able to use either supercharger or ccs networks on my once or twice a year road trips. It seems silly to carry an expensive adapter the other 350 days a year. Someone should set up a rental service for the adapter. $30/week to rent a $500 adapter. Or maybe I'll buy one together with friends and co-op it.

The adapter almost certainly will not have extra cord length. The cables are liquid cooled. An adapter with an extension on it likely isn’t in the cards as a result.

With that said, the v4 supercharger stalls are supposed to have longer cables on them.
Fair point. But that does take away a lot of the value. Replacing the thousands of existing stations with longer cable versions isn't going to happen overnight.

And it would make the existing stations some combination of unusable and/or a recipe for conflict with Rivian's (and Ford's) trying to take the cable from the stall to the left of the parking spot.

I'm overall glad that Rivian made the choice, but it is going to be a messy transition for the existing fleet of CCS cars.

I do share a lot of the concerns over Tesla's control of NACS and the supercharging network. But for the time being, I simply hope that other car makers start adopting NACS as soon as possible so that we can just get to the point of having a single plug and charging standard countrywide.

Hopefully the other charging networks can step up their game to be meaningful competitors to Tesla on the charging front. Most of my concerns about NACS will be unfounded in practice if meaningful competition exists. Tesla will rapidly become a monopolistic and even crappier company if there isn't meaningful competition here.

Or the adapter cable will be heavier gauge wire and 3x the size to reduce resistance and heating.

As quick as this adoption is happening without it already being a recognized standard first is pretty worrying.

Even if I'm forced into the change by a standards body, I'll still likely avoid using the Tesla stations unless I have to. Competition is good and Tesla is doing what any good corporation would do by attempting to position themselves as the only game in town.
Great points. I hope the adapters they will eventually provide/sell will be of great quality. I wonder if Rivian will offer a retrofit to existing R1T and R1S owners?. It will be interesting over the next few years to see what this all means!
