I wonder if they're giving up on the hands free freeway driving?

To my knowledge all hands free systems on the market today rely on a driver monitoring camera to determine whether the driver is paying attention.

Both GM's Supercruise and Ford's Bluecruise do.

Is the camera mounted by the rear view mirror? If so, that is a bad location. GM and Ford mount theirs right in front of the driver. The one in my Mach E works great And so does Blue Cruise.

I’m not a fan of this change. The reason it was there in the first place was to support hands-free driving. While you don’t technically need to monitor the driver to enable hands-free, the fact that they did not mention the impact to future hands-free features makes me think they are pivoting away from those plans…

Must have screwed up somewhere. Why jeopardize a future significant cash flow for full hands free driving?

I believe driver monitoring is necessary to implement a safe hands free system, and to avoid angering the NHSTA along with state DMV regulators.

In any case it does look like hands free is no longer in the cards. They might want to update the following page to remove the mention of it. https://rivian.com/support/article/does-rivian-have-a-driver-assistance-system

It's not mentioned in the link the OP posted that covers the features of Driver+.

Driver+ was never advertised to do a whole lot, but hands free was certainly one of them. It's sad to see it go.
