70% SOC/charge for "daily" vs. 80%

Does anyone know why Rivian suggests 70% charge for daily use vs. 80% (which is what I have seen other manufactures recommend). Does Rivian have less buffer in their charging capacities? just seems odd to recommend a "normal daily charge" that is 70% of capacity. I have my R1S set at 80% because that is what I have done with my other EVs... but realized today that Rivian suggests only charging to 70%.

I split the difference and charge to 75%.
When I picked my R1S up at delivery, they said I could go to 80% and feel ok about it.

Er... I thought Rivian recommends charging to between 70 and 90 % for daily use. Favoring more toward 70% if you typically don't need all the range. 50% target and leave plugged in for long term storage. Tesla and Ford both recommend 90% for daily use. So does Hyundai. I think KIA is recommending 80% and GM can't seem to make up their mind with the Hummer...

I also know that many Rivian guides seem to just be making up stuff as they go because official guidelines from higher up are always in flux or non-existent.

And it has an 8year 100K mile battery and drivetrain warranty as federally mandated. Complete battery pack replacement if it degrades more than 20% over the term of that warranty. I'm charging to 90% when I get my R1S if I get the Large Pack and if we actually do get the Max Pack, then 80% is probably a go for most daily stuff.. And occasional 100% if needed, depending on how well the pack handles regen above 90% (waiting for max pack). But we also drive a lot of miles. Oh and the FTC has already made it clear to automakers that they can't impose charge limits as conditional on that warranty. If there's a hard limit that regularly strains or damages the longevity of the pack, that limit should be marked as 100%.

That said, charging the R1's current Large Pack above 70% gets to be pretty inefficient rather quickly. That probably has more to do with recommendations than any physical limit. L2 home charging is pretty gentle on the pack anyway.

Why charge for more than 70 if you don’t drive more than 100 miles per day. If you expect to drive more then charge more. The difference for degradation is not much (from what I have heard) from 70 to 80 but if you don’t need 80 why use 80?

The closer to the middle of the pack the better it is for the battery long term. The BMS will take care of the battery though and keep it healthy.

In a perfect world you would keep the battery between 25% and 75% state of charge all the time never going above or below those limits.

In the real world however that isn't always practical and Rivian knows this. 85-90% is also reasonable. Avoid discharging below 10% frequently if you can. It's also perfectly fine to charge it to 100% just before a road trip....just not daily.

If 70% meets your daily driving needs do that. If not, raise it up as needed. Mine is set to 80%.

You don’t ever have unexpected events happen? Why fill up a fuel tank if you’re not going to need the full range?

I charge to 90% because I charge infrequently, once or twice per week when I drive into the office. I don’t like going below around 50% ever (except on road trips) because of the loss of performance anyway.

Keeping the battery SOC between 20% and 80% is optimum. Where SOC is stopped in between is irrelevant.

I don't have a functioning gas station in my garage and like to minimize time spent at gas stations.
How do either of those (refuel at home / minimize time fueling in public) address the issue of an unexpected event that would require more than 70% range? I own properties which take 70-80% range for a round trip. If I wake up in the morning and unexpectedly need or want to go then I want to be able to.

I have a functioning charging station in my garage and I like to minimize time spent at public charging stations on the road.

I do this by charging to 80% overnight.

If I were to charge only to 70% or 80%, that would only give me a 200 or 228 mile range and I'd have to plug in daily or if every other day, face range anxiety if any unexpected additional miles were required.

Are there any negative consequences to charging DAILY to 80%?

If so, then I'd prefer charging every other day to 90% for a 257 mi range.

We maintain Opal at 70% or thereabouts. She is driven every day, mostly for short run errands. When she drops below 50%, I plug her in.

My guess - Rivian recommends 70% for daily use because that's roughly the point where charging rate starts to drop significantly at DC fast chargers. We charge at 11.5 kW at home and set it to 80%.

Of course, I wish I didn't have to go fill up at a gas station. All I'm saying is there are reasons to fill/charge higher than the bare minimum. When I used to drive to work there were often days when I randomly had errands to run after work. If I charged to the bare minimum (assuming I had an EV, which I don't yet) then I would need to stop off an a DCFC. It all amounts to the same thing.

I think it's totally fine to charge to 80% for daily use.

We plug in every night regardless of SOC, set to charge to 80% between 12 and 6 am (our utility's "super off peak" window). The R1S is my wife's daily driver, and she does the school runs for our 3 kids who are at 3 different schools. Forgetting to plug in on any given evening could be catastrophic!! ;) If we are road-tripping the next day, I'll cap the overnight charge at 95%, then plug in for the last hour or so before departure so we leave at close to 100%.
