Governor signed the bill last month, goes into effect in 2025. Cars in the most populous counties will still be required to get an emissions inspection but no more going to a shop for a safety inspection. But we'll still be paying for it, now they're just going to call it the "inspection program replacement fee".
Surprised the OP is already due for inspection. I haven’t received my TX plates yet, but thought new vehicle stickers were good for 2 years. Maybe ICE only?

Nope, only dealerships have access to the 2 yr new vehicle inspection/registration in TX thus Rivian can only provide 12 month.

MA needs to jack up the front end to check for tie-rod ends/ball joints/suspension failure.

Rivian owner to tech, “Here, use these jack pucks to jack up my front end.”

Tech to Rivian owner, “Why do I need these things?”

Rivian owner to tech, “So you don’t jack up my front end while jacking up my front end. Er…”

Tech:

Yup, I had to hold the puck while the guy got the jack lined up and lifted up to the puck.

All MA inspection stations have a state provided camera monitoring system in the inspection bay. They will pull a license from a business if they catch them not doing the required things.

We used to have inspections but the did away with it many years ago.

Now around 5-10% of the cars on the road are clearly unfit for the road. Where they're either obviously burning oil and polluting the air or components like tail lights aren't working.

Note: There is no source for that percentage other than my opinion so it could be more or less, but it sure seems like a lot from my observations.

Doesn't Washington state have emissions testing? That would catch the pollution the air cars.

I wish CO had annual safety inspections. I can't go a single day without seeing multiple headlights
or taillights out on various cars. Similarly, came up on a %&$^ in a RAM with basically zero visible taillights because they decided to smoke them out so dark that they'd only be visible at night if you were a foot off their ass.
CO used to have them! They did away with the annual inspections in the late '80s, maybe early '90s, I don't recall exactly when. I guess they just figured a basic safety inspection along with an emissions test was good enough.

And traffic cops here ignore almost everything anyway. And even then don't seem to care half the time. Unless you're in some cesspool of police corruption like Edgewater or Ft. Garland where they issue random tickets for made-up offenses. State patrol likes to run their speed traps... Too many cars out there that are not road-worthy. I don't understand why people drive without working lights... 99% of the time it's a < $5 bulb and 5 minutes of your time to replace it. Then again, that $5 bulb is $17 at a brick and mortar auto parts store these days and most people wouldn't know what to do with it anyway.

Texas just passed a law doing away with inspections. Gov signed it last month. Think it takes effect Sept 1.
That goes hand in hand with the new EV tax as well?

Would rather pay the $7 fee than the $500 tax

Yeah, I agree. Is it $500 or $200. Thought it was $200 annually and $500 up front going forward.
. My son has a R1T also. He’s had it a year. He’s required to get an inspection this year. Doesn’t know who to take it to.
If you live in Houston, DFW or Austin/SA you still have to have emission testing, LOl. I live in the country.

This sounds like some California-level s**t. That surprises me for a state like TX.
On the contrary, we don't have an inspection here in California. Emissions, yes, but that's it, so EVs don't qualify.

Starts in 2025.
They only got rid of the safety portion. Not emissions. Emissions are only tested on 2 thru 24 year old gasoline vehicles.
