Anything in the store is likely to have an "earlier" VIN than current production - some won't, but most probably will.

Vehicles end up in the shop for many reasons - some absolutely will be "returned" vehicles, corrected and brought up to spec, some will just be vehicles where people abandoned them during the 8-step process, or just couldn't acquire financing, there are many reasons.

Given the current production ramp, if a vehicle sits at the factory for 2-3 weeks to deal with closing out the previous order (and giving enough time to be SURE it's abandoned) and then getting it prepped to go on the store it's not crazy to have it already be a few thousand vehicles back - it's not as far back in time as it used to be. Rivian produced almost 14k vehicles in the last qtr - let's round down and make the math easy - let's say it was 12k. 3 months in a qtr, that means 4k vehicles per month, not all of those will be R1S - but a lot will, anywhere from 2-2.5K I would wager given they have said they're weighting production to something like 70/30 R1S:R1T (and the remaining 2k we took off the production numbers could be the EDV so a few hundred of those a month too). So in 3-4 weeks you could have an R1S VIN jump up by 2K. If it was a unit that needed work, service centers (even at the factory) are likely backed up a LOT meaning it might take 6-8 weeks to bring it up to spec - now you're 4-5K "behind" in VIN - but 2 months isn't exactly "old" - it "feels" like "thousands" behind means it's been a LONG time, but we're just not used to the current pace Rivian is churning things out - it's WAY faster than those early R1T deliveries .

Bottom line: An almost 11K VIN (if the newest are around 15K) is maybe like 2 months old or even slightly less. That doesn't inherently mean it was a "reject" - even just a pure failure to purchase likely takes several weeks to deal with the paperwork before it can be re-sold on the store. I wouldn't worry. Regardless of how it comes to you, YOU still get a brand new warranty, and 7 days to return it. It's not like any of that gets "used up" just because someone else sent it back.
Thank you, finally had a call with my Guide today as I’d lost access to the 8 steps since last 2 wks. You were right, it seems that the unit likely had QC or parts issue. I didn’t really probe about VIN ending in 10,7xx build date as didn’t sound like Guide had more knowledge over the call but later received below message.

Here’s the official response, “Hi! I was able to find out why you are not able to access the digital purchasing process. The VIN has yet to factory gate here at our Normal, IL plant. When you were able to access the digital purchasing process it was in error on our part. The VIN is still associated with your order and when it actually DOES factory gate, you will be re-invited into the digital purchasing process. Hopefully that will happen sometime this week. Your patience is appreciated.”

Not sure why it’d have ended up on R1 shop if not ready yet. I’m keeping open mind as I guess there’ll be more QC done for this unit vs ones coming fresh off of assembly line…since it’s been sitting for a while.

Selected an R1S from the shop on 7/17. Later noticed that the Vin was 0104XX, which seems to be a mid May build and was sitting in Normal for 2 months. According to my Guide: "The vehicles in the R1 Shop are available because of canceled orders. Your vehicle was in Normal because a previous customer placed an order, configured it, and then canceled their order."

Also batch made as well., and not just cancelled orders.

I’m sure some are people that decided not to purchase or could not get financing but not necessarily all of them. A lot of people have been getting shop access and picking vehicles available in the shop for earlier delivery rather than waiting on their configuration. I’m sure this is adding to the number of vehicles available in the shop.

thanks, mine is 0107xx. Glacier White, Ocean Coast, 21” wheels. Did you get a delivery timeline or the 8 steps?
I had the 8 steps but then they disappeared and after back and forth ~ 2 wks later Guide response is 8 step generate once the vehicle makes it through Factory Gate. Which I’m still wondering as to even if it was a canceled order, it sat at factory for 2+ months versus being diverted to Next reservation person in line…
Will wait and see when I get the pre purchase steps access again.

I went straight to 8 steps, but interesting that it wasn't presented to me as this was my exact configuration. I had to pick it from the shop. Had I waited for my official vehicle, I'd still be waiting.

I just selected an R1S from the shop with a high 15XXX VIN. An email from Rivian indicated that it is still in Normal and will be at my local service center s00n.

GW/OC/20" Dark - I'm pumped!

selected an R1S identical to my configuration from the shop this morning - El Cap Granite, 20" All terrain, black mtn + wood. VIN is 10XXX and it's already at the SC going through final QC. Could've picked it up as early as Sat, but wasn't quite prepared to move so quickly and traveling for a long weekend. Aiming to pick it up on 8/4.

  • Nov - 2021 Order
  • Jan '24 to Mar '24 --> window provided
  • July 17th, 2024 --> Shop Access
  • July 24th, 2023 --> Found my match, Guide Contact, Contract Signed, and VIN 0097XX assigned. Scheduled pick-up 07/28 locally, 8-step process 80% complete.
  • July 25th, 2023 --> Got e-mail stating VIN change, called guide said the car was in the wrong state, the guide found an exact match and assigned new VIN 158XX with the same configuration from the factory.
  • July 27th, 2023 --> Car has left factory e-mail. Waiting for a website or guide contact on the real delivery date.
Few Questions:
  1. Any idea how long it takes to come to Bay Area California from the factory? They said 6-8 weeks.
  2. Any major items I should observe during delivery?
  3. What actually comes with the R1S? ie keys (how many), compressor kit, charger, etc...

By trains to California is 6 to 8 weeks
By truck is probably 2 weeks
Comes with one key fob, 2 key cards, mobile charger and compressor kit.

Us too. I think Rivian is just throwing away that whole matching thing and giving people shop access. Within 24 hours of getting shop access our exact configuration popped up.

Hours and hours of precision time that I could have spent doing more productive things ... like browsing RIVIANFORUMS.COM.
