Hey All,

TLDR - Always Keep Your R1T Plugged In

I haven't posted in a while since I've been generally happy with my R1T. However I am pretty incensed right now and wanted to let you all know about my experience.

I left my vehicle unattended for roughly 8 days, from July 25 until today August 2nd. It wasn't plugged in and I had left it with 80% charge.

When I checked last night August 1st, I still had 64% left, and this morning August 2nd, it was at 62%.

I saw a bunch of 12v errors and vehicle battery issues and proceeded to call Rivian Service. They had me reboot the vehicle and when it came back up, my vehicle showed 46% battery and more critical faults.

I couldn't put the vehicle in drive since the brakes wouldn't release even though it recognized my key and I lost power steering. The brakes also made a nice crunchy sound and was very hard to depress.

I was told depending on what they find at the service center that I may be responsible for the associated costs for this repair and car rental because I didn't have my R1T plugged in for the week I was away.

I'm awaiting a tow now to the service center even though their earliest appointment is for Aug 11.

Thought all the 12V issues were solved but I guess they aren't.

I'm really starting to sour on Rivian.

maybe related - I've called in to the service line for other issues about a month ago when I noticed incorrectly displayed range and overcharging. I was told since it's software and not a pressing problem they won't schedule an appt to have it looked at.

o_O
What? So we are responsible for keeping it plugged in when it's at the airport for 7 days, with no avaiable charging infrastructure? What about 6.5 days.... 6 days .... 4 days ..... 3 days....?

Yep sounds like it from what I'm hearing from the rep. So keep it at home and call a ride share.

I'm sorry that you're having an issue with your vehicle but surely you have to recognize this is an outlier circumstance and not universal to all R1 vehicles?
Sure, that's probably not the case for newer builds but early VINs and deliveries from March 2022 could be affected.

I've traveled and left my vehicle unplugged for 10 days. IIRC it might have lost around 6-8% of charge.
I've also seen JerryRigEverything leaving it for a while as well. That's the only way I was comfortable doing so. Now it's YMMV.

This is ^#$%#&$^& up. As long as the HV battery doesn't die, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to leave a vehicle unplugged. As others have said, at the airport it would be impossible to stay plugged in.

There is no way in hell they should be able to make you pay for those repairs. Nowhere in the user guide does it say you need to leave your vehicle plugged in at all times. You didn't do anything outside of the norm and you didn't abuse your vehicle in any way so this falls squarely under the warranty. Don't let them off the hook on that.

Too many "outliers". Plus even an "outlier" should not be told they were at fault for this. Noway this is a user error issue.

This is likely just CYA language Rivian is using because they've probably seen issues with people draining their 12V battery running accessories off of them. I will be very surprised if they don't cover repairs and that isn't the situation. My truck sat unplugged for over three weeks at the Service Center, so there's no way that stipulation about needing to be plugged in is correct since they don't manage it that well themselves.

To be clear Rivian totally messed up the support aspect of this. I'm not deflecting on that and I hope the OP is taken care of.

My feedback was around the title of the post implying this is a problem affecting all Rivians. That is patently false.

same. my truck was at the SC for almost two weeks, never plugged in. they charged it just before i picked up. i know because i was checking my app multiple times a day and the battery was slowly depleting 1-2% a day until just before i picked up.
