Here's some more info on the route:
https://adventr.co/4x4-trails/kokopelli-4x4-trail/
I might be able to meet up for part of your adventure!
Looks like part of that follows a bit of the Castle Valley route between Moab and Gateway. I had planned to take that route from Moab to Gateway and on to Telluride, but the Trails Offroad description basically said don't dare attempt it when it's been raining because of the mud. Basically if it had rained recently it was impassable by pretty much any 4-wheeled vehicle, so I avoided it last month because it was so rainy at that point.

If you look at the Tesla map, the ones across I-90 are all older V2 stations, but I-94 is covered with V3 stations that could get the Magic Docks.

Pardon my ignorance, and I've been wondering since I found out that not ALL of the SuperCharger network will be open to us next year.
Can you please clarify how to tell the difference between V2 & V3 (is it simply seeing whether they're 150kW or 250kW)? And further, will only the V3 stations be available to us next year (whether by Magic Dock or the issued adapter)? TIA

Yes the 150kw are V2 and the 250kw are V3. Only the V3 units have the hardware and software to communicate with CCS protocol. Tesla deployed the V3 chargers in Europe with CCS cables.

V4 units will support 1000V and. 350kw, as well as having longer cables.

All V3s and upcoming V4s will be compatible. You can go to plugshare and filter for superchargers that output >150 kW to identify V3s. If you're at a site you can identify V2s by looking at the central cabinets. V2s have a hood on the front like in the photo.
Rivian R1T R1S Moab UT - Tesla Supercharger with Magic Dock is up! main-qimg-59aefe45ee45156c5963370060d5b36f-lq

V2 has dispensors numbered 1A 1B 2A 2B etc for each cabinet
V3 is numbered 1A 1B 1C 1D etc for each cabinet.

Darn! I didn't realize that limitation existed on the V2 units. Fortunately around me they are largely V3, but I suspect many other places I would like to go (e.g. I90 area) are largely still V2. :(

Yeah a lot of the charging deserts I visit are v2 so no luck unless Tesla upgrades them.

Yes they are up and running. There are about 4 of them mixed in with 8 total chargers. They are right adjacent to the Hyatt, just down the street from the Field Station Moab hotel. You need the Tesla app to activate them and it tells you which ones will work. Once you select one and provide CC it will release the charger. Works good, but RAN is WAY better (and free). Sad thing is I see a lot of Teslas charging at Rivian sites in parks like Yosemite, all for free, with an adaptor they have, yet at the Magic Dock I was charged about 49 cents per KW. Bummer Rivian hasn't put a RAN in Moab, perfect place for one!
Odd that Tesla has an adapter built into their Magic Dock, yet we can't get one to use at locations without the Magic Dock.

Tesla wants to take your money, just as much as government money.

They are deploying Magic Docks to locations with low usage. They have already sunk the cost into those sites, so adding CCS provides a new revenue stream.
Charging revenue is a miniscule portion of Tesla's total revenue and compared to the amount of money sunk into building and maintaining fast DC charging infrastructure worldwide to accelerate the adoption of EVs, it's really not even a drop in the bucket.

But go ahead and bite the benevolent hand that feeds you. That's your prerogative.

Totally respect Tesla and all they have done. Just would like to see the adapter fast tracked. What is the point of the delay until the spring?

This is great news. I see it shown in the Tesla app and was planning a stop there in early October as I drive CA to MN. Looking forward to trying it out!

They activated another Magic Dock station in Washington overnight. There are docks installed in LA and MS that have not been activated.
