I'd suggest altering your frame of reference here:

- BMW X5M starting MSRP $122,300
- BMW X5 M60i starting MSRP $89,300

Both come with a 4.4L twin turbo mild hybrid V8, one with 617hp and the other with 523hp. So $33,000 for 94hp. BTW, that's more than 1/3 the price of the M60i.

Both the max pack and large pack configs have the same horsepower and torque, but the difference maker in the EV space is range today (until charging networks improve). For what some buyers consider a meaningful change in range to be $10-15K doesn't feel crazy. Heck, both of these BMW X5's are likely separated by an engine tune and some trim pieces. People pay for the specs they choose to use or value, nothing wrong with that. Has been the way of the business for hundreds of years. Ever purchase a cellphone plan? How often have you used your allotment of unlimited minutes, texts and data? Maybe a prepaid plan with fixed minutes, texts and data would be less expensive but perhaps the price differential isn't meaningful to you. Same applies here, price discrimination at work.

The fact you don't think it's weird kinda says it all. A more mature way to state it would be, "personally, I don't mind the cost as the benefit is worth it to me" or "I'm fortunate my financial situation allows me to consider that as an option".
Which was stated in such language above already:

I'll say it again: while the extra range for overall, blended use / EPA based range calc may not seem like a lot, if the battery spec is 175kWh (vs. 135 for the large ...), that's a decent amount of extra juice.

Just plug 40kWh into a few efficiency calculations. Like 400Wh/mile tooling along some rural roads under 55MPH, that's another 100 miles. Or the extra time (in some V2X capable future) where you can run X/Y/Z a lot longer.

Adding NACs charge capability and getting access to the Tesla supercharger network is a much easier and way cheaper way to add 30-40 miles of range.

This max pack makes sense if you have to rely on the current CCS network and for a few unique individual situations

My case: If I plan on driving ~100 miles into off-road territory where there isn’t any charging, and camp, there is range anxiety that builds up.

Even superchargers aren’t in rural areas or wilderness.

Maybe Max Pack for $10K more will be worth it for those that also make $1M like OP. Until my salary goes that high, it’s dumb as hell. And, having the Tesla charging network available will make this irrelevant for $10K.
Rivian keeps showing us they have no clue how to price things.

Has anyone else had to sit, waiting in line for a Tesla Supercharger? I have, for up to an hour, in multiple locations in Colorado (Lone Tree / Park Meadows 7 days / week; + other locations no matter if it's holiday travel, a weekend or any other time). Do we think Tesla Superchargers will be used LESS when they are opened up to all EVs in the near future?

Has anyone else lost an entire day waiting on a tow truck to arrive in a remote area to take you to the charger 1 mile away? I have (in my 2014 Tesla S 85, with a supposed max range of 206 miles, vs 265 when new, but real world miles of around 150).

I love my Quad Large Pack R1S and am going to give the Dual Max Pack R1S a try, to compare. I only ever wanted the R1S Max Pack, but settled for the Large Pack because I had been waiting 4 years since making my deposit. I do a lot of true off-roading, so the Quad made / makes sense for my lifestyle. I am disappointed that a Quad Max Pack is not yet available. I also look forward to @OutofSpecKyle performing similar tests on a Max Pack as he has on the Large Pack (range test, charge speed / curve test, usable kWh, insight on the different battery chemistry . . . degradation comparison, better to not charge to 100%?, off-road capability of dual vs quad, which he has recently briefly discussed / experienced, but not fully field-tested (?)).

Yes, I'm a unique 'use case'. I regularly drive 700 miles over a weekend, year-round, over multiple mountain passes, to the middle of nowhere. I explore the western U.S. and Canadian Rockies, driving >30k miles per year. I used to do this in my Tesla S, and sometimes in my Toyota FJ. I am so thankful for the R1S, which is a combination of both those vehicles, and better in so many ways. This Summer, I've been able to skip over one RAN location and arrive with 20 to 40 miles of range at another RAN, which saves me 20 to 30+ minutes (by not having to divert off-route to the first RAN). Will that be possible in Winter with my Large Pack? Winter conditions have a significant impact on my Tesla's range; I didn't notice as significant impacts in Feb / Mar / Apr 2023, but didn't have warm weather conditions to compare it against . . . will be able to this coming winter. In Winter, road conditions change quickly . . . snow, ice, a semi-truck jack knifes right in front of you (happened to me last March on Monarch Pass), road could become closed or otherwise impassable. So, for me, every minute counts.

[By the way, I used my MaxTrax to enable that semi-truck to move enough so that traffic could be on their way again. I highly recommend them.]

Lots of people make lots of money, and Rivian doesn't have to / can't sell *that* many of these anyway. Also, I would love a range of 390 vs. my current ~320 (using ultra-anemic driving methods) if I could get it, especially in states (like Texas) where the charging infrastructure gets pretty slim pretty quickly, and if it had been available earlier, I would have seriously considered it. That said, yes, I'm also hopeful the Tesla network and additional network expansions will make this a problem of the olden days.

Are you sure you get pre price hinge pricing for max pack on R1S? I heard rivian was being goofy about that because they never actually offered max pack on R1S originally.
Yes, I am really pleased with the pricing.

I wasn’t sure what they were going to do either. What I assumed they would do would be to offer the same pre-March base price, but charge full price of $10k for the max pack option. But they didn’t, it’s discounted to $7 (I had said six in my original post, that was my mistake). So I am really happy about. I know $7k is $7k either way, and this is just in my head, but to me it feels not as bad either because it sort of rounds to being an $80k car from either side, so it doesn’t feel as bad. Obviously that’s just optics, but it helps me :)
